About
Focussing on locally-grown and sourced artisan produce, Thornham Deli will showcase the very best that Norfolk has to offer in the deli cafe. The kitchen will continue to produce its own home-made jams, chutney's, cakes and savouries. The daily specials board and lunch table will reflect what is available seasonally and locally. We have our own brand of products produced in our kitchen. There is an amazing gift and lifestyle shop which sells all things for the home and clothing from Anna and Gunhill. The restaurant is famous for breakfast and serves lunches and afternoon tea as well as offering a wide range of home made deli goodies. There is an outside eating and relaxing area with toddlers playground and a more grown up playground next door. Ample parking means there will always be space for you.

I'd driven past the Thornham deli numerous times, had never stopped, and was surprised to find that they offered accommodation. I usually stop in another hotel when in that area but opted to give them a go. Wow, it was superb! The room designer had been very creative, and the staff eveidently worked extremely hard to maintain it to such a high standard. The breakfast in the deli downstairs was amazing, and when I found that we had a complimentary cream tea for the following day too, I was very impressed. The deli itself is very good, quite pricey, but as it is so popular the staff are run off their feet and customers need to be patient. We went there 'out of season' (in January) and it was packed, so what it's like in high-season I dread to think. However, that wouldn't put me off returning, and I would consider myself lucky to be able to stay there again when next in that area. Note - the deli is not open after 5pm, so doesn't serve evening meals. But there are some great pubs serving excellent food within a few minutes walking distance.

Brunch at 10am, as usual the place was very busy, I guess it’s very reasonably priced at under a£10 for a full month breakfast. Yes there is a bit of a wait, but not too bad. Breakfast is excellent, the service good, but sometimes a bit of a wait. Looks scruffy. Would we go back yes of course

I had a thoroughly delicious breakfast today of crushed avocado, poached eggs and oven roasted tomatoes on sour dough toast.Fantastic! Everyone else in my group also very much rated their food and drinks. Yes we had to wait to be seated and yes there was a wait before our order was taken (we were warned there being a delay when seated) but for goodness sake people, have you seen how busy the north Norfolk coast is at present? I can’t believe the number of negative comments on here about wait times, poor service etc. If you see the car park is jammed packed or people queuing out the door, do you really think someone is going to take your order as soon as you close your menu?! Who cares if you get served by Bob, Dick or Harriet? Yes, it seems like they have been allocated roles so frustratingly not anyone can take your order. However I see nothing but the young staff running round like the proverbial blue bottomed flies and working damned hard. If you’re on holiday then just chill out - the beach is not going anywhere. If you’re a local, then try and be a bit more supportive and understanding of local businesses who are trying their best to deal with these unprecedented numbers. The tourists are the people who add probably 30-50K on your house price!!

We went out for my daughter's birthday lunch today and we were sadly disappointed, both by the service and the quality of the food. The waitresses were moody and unwelcoming, and the service was slow and disorganised. I had a Ploughmans platter- the bread roll was dry, the scotch egg was dry and inedible and the pork pie was mouldy. My mum had a soup (half a bowlful, bit of a small portion) and sandwich, the sandwich bread was dry and stale. My daughter had a fishfinger wrap and chips - her dish was fine. The waitress took my mouldy ploughmans away after about 15 minutes and was nice about it. Overall though, I came away feeling like Thornham Deli is over priced, understaffed and the food is poorly sourced and not fresh. I certainly wouldn't consider buying from the deli based on my experience in the cafe.

Social distancing non existent in the shop/deli. Poor signage when moving from the shop to the restaurant area and when asking for a table we were instructed to wait outside. Eventually an employee came out and said no tables were free and there was a waiting list for 12 people. He was very vague when asked approx how long the wait would be i.e. “who knows, people will take as long as they take to leave”. Through careful questioning we eventually established that there were 3 tables in the queue before us but he wasn’t initially able to tell us if the people already seated had ordered or already eaten their main courses or desserts. It was hard going getting anything useful out of him. We advised that we’d already paid the parking fee of £2 so would wait for a table, he failed to mention that we could get it refunded if we spent £20 we only saw the sign about this when we had already paid the bill, which was £58, and were on our way back to the car. Ploughman’s lunch was below par and expensive. Carrots and celery were dry, no butter for the bread, no traditional pickle (although there was some yellow pickled cauliflower in a small ramekin). The cheese and ham were very nice though. The Chicken Kiev was good although the chips were luke warm. The Fish and chips were excellent. No one asked if everything was ok after the main courses had been served but aside from that, once seated the table service was good and the tables were all thoroughly cleaned after use/prior to the next people being seated. Overall, we were disappointed with the experience. We have been to the deli many times previously (and really enjoyed it) although this was the first visit since the Covid pandemic hit. We hope it was just a temporary blip.

After hearing rave reviews about the Deli’s breakfast my husband and two daughters decided to try it for ourselves this week. A treat for Daddy’s birthday! Service was seriously slow, Covid measures taken into consideration, when our food eventually turned up it was cold. The scrambled eggs were so dry, my eight year old can make better, my oven roasted tomatoes hadn’t seen an oven, they were just fresh and thrown on the plate (by the way I’m a chef so I know my stuff!). My husband‘a full English was mediocre. The worst bit of the whole meal was the bacon, absolutely vile with the rind still on like war times! As we left after parting with £50 I noticed all the dirty plates with the thick unappealing flaccid looking bacon on them. We will never go back and eat there again. The young staff on the other hand were delightful.

I visited the Deli for brunch on Monday 31 August (the bank holiday Monday) as part of a 5 person group as we'd been recommended it by a friend. When we arrived, it was busy with a queue out the front of maybe 6 or 7 other tables. This was about 9:45 so probably a popular time. The front of house person seemed alright and did a good job finding people tables. He told us how long to expect to wait for food which I appreciated. Another woman kept appearing only to announce that they weren't running the Eat Out to Help Out scheme on that day. I'm not sure why as I presume that they had been for the rest of the month. After that point, the service was poor. It took much longer than we had been told to expect for our orders to be taken and then a long time for the food to arrive. The Deli was busy but it looked like no more than its ordinary capacity so they should have been able to cope. Equally, there seemed to be lots of staff members milling about so staff numbers didn't seem to be an issue (we were probably served by 6 different staff members at different points). When the drinks were served, the waitress didn't know which coffee was which so people ended up drinking the wrong drinks. When the food arrived, one of the dishes didn't have the tomatoes that were meant to come with it and an extra of bacon had also been missed. We asked about this and the waiter/waitress (can't remember) said they'd check. They never came back so 5 minutes later I had to had to ask someone else. Finally they were brought out with no apology but just a churlish "there you go". I enjoyed my meal (veggie breakfast) and the potato crunchies were delicious but the other food was a bit hit and miss. We expected the pancakes to be stacked American style pancakes but actually it was just a single, fat, stodgy "English" pancake. After the meal we paid at the till with just a total given. I asked for a receipt so that I could split it between us. I later realised that, I had been charged £1.50 for an "extra" of tomato on my breakfast. At the time of ordering, I had asked for no eggs and was asked if I wanted to swap it for anything so I'd asked for a tomato. I'd not expected to be charged £1.50 for half a grilled tomato that was offered as a swap! The final nail in the coffin was that my friend had, at the time of ordering, requested a croissant to go at the end of the meal. After eating she had to prompt for this to be (slowly) provided and then they tried to stop her from leaving saying that she hadn't paid for it. Thankfully I had the receipt which showed that it had already been charged for but this wouldn't have been the case had it not been specifically requested. Overall I was thoroughly unimpressed with the service. I know that working in the service industry isn't always fun but the staff made this abundantly clear in their attitudes. To me, the food wasn't in any way good enough to make up for this. I would not go back again and I would advice other people to avoid it as well. It might be better at off-peak times when they aren't at full capacity but, in my mind, your service should meet a certain standard even when you're full.

This was our second visit ,so I’ll break this down into two areas . Covid measures - basically very poor, no social distancing , we sat near to the door to the toilets, not once did we see any staff member enter to clean these at all, people were queing next to each other , no member of staff keeping an eye at all. Our table was given one squirt of cleaning fluid before we were sat down, a member of staff then proceeded to tip our cutlery from a plastic cup onto the table !! Not enough staff , to cover the waiting on the tables and the cleaning measures. There were track and trace forms on the table, but at no point did a staff member tell us about them, ask us to fill them in, or were remotely bothered by them. From our previous visit, no tables had been moved at all. The menus were taken off us, and obviously used again, they were the normal menus we had used on a previous visit , no disposable menus. People were coming and going in the shop and deli, no maximum, number of people , it was a free for all. Four meals ordered , and one came out cold , this was sent back , and when it came out again, a salad had appeared on the plate, and the sweet potato fries had obviously been refried again and were like cinders !!!!, nobody on our table would eat them. The second plate of food was bland and like eating cardboard , it was left , and the item taken off the bill. Staff were young and did not have much customer service skills. Really put a dampener on a celebratory meal, we didn’t even bother with a dessert , the experience was awful !

We visited for breakfast this morning. It did not feel at all Covid safe. There were some token gestures such as servers wearing face visors but they clearly aren’t bothered about Covid safety in any other respect. They had track and trace forms on the table which you were expected to fill in with a pen that had obviously been used multiple times. The server never asked us for the forms back although we were told at the start that they would. The menus also looked to have been used numerous times and had greasy fingerprints on them. We never saw them clean any tables between customers. They also touched all the plates and mugs that we were eating from (in other venues they have brought these out on a tray and asked us to take them). To pay for the food we were told that we had to go inside, and were passed between 3 different tills meaning we had to walk through the busy restaurant and into the shop where we then realised we weren’t wearing masks but should have been. When we arrived it took 20 minutes for them to take our order (this was only because we chased them) and over an hour for the food to arrive. If you care about visiting Covid safe restaurants, this is definitely one to avoid. It’s a real shame as we expected much better from them.

We popped in for lunch with two adults and two children, we were seated in the new extention which has been tastefully decorated and was full of beautiful furniture. There was a roaring fire and the whole place just had a lovely atmosphere, people were chilling out after walks on the beach and the new section also allows dogs which was nice to see. There was an extensive menu including all the lunchtime options to suit all tastes, we had jacket potatoes with unusual fillings such as goats cheese beetroot and spinage absolutely delicious even the sidesalad was fresh and vibrant. My mother said the coronation chicken was fab, we couldnt fault it! The staff were friendly and efficient, prices were reasonable to. There was a good childrens menu and large self service water dispensers filled with fresh cucumber which was a nice touch. The food was all tasty and freshly prepared. After lunch we browsed the shop and purchased even more yummy goods at the deli, the whole place has a feel good north norfolk vibe that brings people together and is a great place to recharge. I have been before many times and will definately be back.

We love this place, the staff are always friendly even at the end of their incredibly busy shifts. Food is lovely and choices change frequently, good selection of cakes too. This place gets very busy so if you turn up at main lunch time expect to wait a little while however they have a deli and shop which you can browse whilst you wait. If you on the north Nofolk Coast mthis has to be one of if not the best place on the coast for lunch or drinks and snacks. They are open until late afternoon which is a shame I wish they stayed open a couple of hours later. I've pupt that we travelled in February but we live in Norfolk and go out of our way to visit regularly.

Came in sunday morning before our walk for some takeaway drinks and cake to find that once we had left, the milk in our coffees was sour, and had visible curdled chunks in our tea. Whilst ordering our cakes, my wife had heard the issue of the milk being brought up by the two gentlemen behind the coffee counter to a lady in a dress that we can only assume was management. We didn't think much of it at the time. We returned later that day on our way home to see if the issue had been resolved by just ordering 1 tea to takeaway. To our surprise, it was WORSE than before! I feel sorry for all the people who ordered hot drinks that day, especially at those prices!

We visited for brunch on a Tuesday morning, the car park was full so we had to park down in the village to avoid the pay and display charges of the adjoining car park... It was only after we ordered our coffees that we were made aware of a 20 minute wait for drinks, and then overhearing another conversation that we found out there was a further wait for food. There were so many staff members that we seemed to be served by many different waiters and it wasn't overly busy in the deli so I wasn't sure what made the wait so long. We asked for some tap water, which was brought over in a bottle but with no glasses, had to ask twice for glasses and when they did finally bring some over they were dirty. The food itself was nice and the coffee was ok. It just didn't seem like a smooth-running cafe yet...

Thornham Deli has long been considered a stalwart of the local community and for good reason. With exceptional food, decor, service & a friendly, vibey & welcoming atmosphere it is always a delightful experience to eat and shop here. The staff have worked SO incredibly hard to make their venue safe and welcoming for their reopening after lockdown, and they should be thoroughly applauded for their efforts! When we dined there on Sunday, all the (appropriately spaced) tables were full but the atmosphere was calm, ordered and, as it should be, very enjoyable. During the lockdown itself the deli went above and beyond to serve their local community. We should all be supportive of our hospitality industry at this incredibly tough time, for theirs is surely the hardest hit and most publicly criticised - please, please be fair and think long and hard before you write something potentially harmful. The deli is spotlessly clean, there are foot-pumping hand sanitising stations, doors and windows are open to let in fresh air, there are 2m markers everywhere and staff are wearing masks, you can even see that the menu's have been sanitised - they ARE complying and doing their very best. Also the food is delicious, service is great, & its a treat to once again drink fab coffee! Highly recommended if you are excited to venture out!

We stayed a week nearby on holiday and loved our daily visits for coffee and cake or takeaway sausage rolls/ fishcakes. The choice and quality of the cakes is excellent - 5 star. Most of the employees were great and friendly but there were a couple of waiting staff who let the side down. We ate lunch on one day - I was disappointed with my Kedgeree but my husband enjoyed his panini. Will try lunch again on a future visit.
