Our view of the place was tainted from the first by the floor making sticky noises whenever you walked on it. Is a teenage pub and no doubt staff go home at 2am not wanting to wash a floor at that time. Food OK

We spent some time trying to find somewhere to eat that served a drink too and we were not disappointed. Excellent value for money. The lentil soup was very tasty and the crusty roll was lovely and fresh. Highly recommended if you are visiting Alnwick.

Good value food and drink with the occasional live band. Lots of room i'm not sure how many covers but you will still get served quickly. Parking out side if you are driving.

Popped in for a quick drink mid-afternoon (on holiday, not an alcoholic!) Went here as it had good reviews and accepted dogs. No real ale just John Smiths that didn't go done well. Decor and furniture was tired. Not rushing back

Nearly didn't go in as didn't look great decor etc but dog friendly and checked on trip advisor so gave it a go. Very glad we did. Staff v friendly and surroundings clean but basic looking as think main business is evening bar and music venue. But all of this doesn't matter given the welcome and service and food. Dog... More

We visited on the 19th July 2015 for sunday lunch. It really was amazing!!! The place its self was a bit bar/nightclub type look and at first I was worried (as I had picked this place for us). The lady behind the bar was really friendly and helpful and the food was absolutely stunning. Would definitely recommend and will be... More

We popped in initially for a coffee but ended up having a light lunch. Pleased we did! I had lentil and vegetable soup, which was piping hot served with a warm bun and tasted quite delicious. Friend had duck pate which was served with a salad, chutney and 2 slices of toast - quite a plateful and seemingly quite tasty.... More

We recently called in to the Penny black for some lunch......it was very clean, the staff were polite and attentive and wow .....the food was absolutely wonderful. We started with soup which was deserving of 4 star status, our main courses were equally as good and very well presented. The decor is a little jaded but as the Penny black is basically... After being told by a near by pub that they had no food left we visited the Penny Black. How lucky were we! The food was amazing and the service was excellent. The lady behind the bar was fantastic and very friendly. My 3yr old daughter was made so welcome. Definitely will make a return visit.

Just visited here today for some lunch and was so glad we went in. Lady behind the bar was very helpful indeed. I had fishcakes which were to die for and the best fresh salad I have ever had (far better than your top notch restaurants). My husband had Cumberland sausage and he said they were delicious. Very good value... More
