About
The inn has medieval origins and is a few paces from the centre of Petworth. With a relaxed atmosphere throughout, its unspoilt bar features ships beams, wooden and slate floors, stone walls and 3 fireplaces, one of which is used to spit-roast joints of meat. On fine days the walled garden is a peaceful suntrap. With a choice of local real ales served by hand pump or directly from the barrel and an extensive wine list we cater to all tastes. We are serious about our food and ingredients are locally sourced where possible; much of our fish is landed at Littlehampton, the Sussex Downs provide our lamb, along with most of the vegetables that we serve. The seasonal menu is changed four times a year, supplemented by a fortnightly menu with daily chef’s specials to provide a comprehensive choice for the most discerning diner. A warm welcome awaits you. The inn is recognised by The Good Beer Guide, The Good Pub Guide, Cask Marque and Great Country Pubs.

We've been to the Angel Inn a few times and have never been disappointed. Very good and varied menu, but yesterday our group of four chose the fish & chips and the Goodwood beef burger. Fish and chips were exceptional, but my North American husband thought the burger overseasoned and disliked the use of brioche bun, which is everywhere now unfortunately. Desserts were great. Good atmosphere with a lovely welcoming open fire. Service was very good, but like other reviewers I would prefer to add my own tip rather than see 12.5% added to the bill. However, it will not stop me going there again. Great place.

Thank you for your review of The Angel Inn. I am delighted to hear that you enjoyed your meal overall and that you find our fish and chips exceptional. I agree with your husband, but the majority of our guest do like the brioche bun. When I have a burger i always ask chef to serve it on ciabatta. Thank you once again for your kind words. I have passed your comments about the bathroom to our senior management team for review. Thank you once again for your kind words.

Extraordinary experience considering that I have a very open mind about supporting all businesses trying to get back to some sort of normailty. Didn't get offerred a drink by the person who showed us to our table. Waitress No 1, whilst very personable ,didn't know the menu & got our order wrong initially until highlighted (would have gone very wrong). Waitress No 2 then appeared asking for our order claerly unaware that we had already ordered from Waitress No 1. All drinks arrived together even though wine should have arrived with meal & no ice bucket. Wine left to open ourselves. Starters arrived OK with Waitor No 3. Mains arrived with Waitor No 4 swimming in gravy ( really, is it too much to ask for gravy/sauce/jus to be served separately in a boat) & when asked for horseradish (this was after all roast beef) arrived with another person wo served this as a nano portion in a shot glass! This was not one portion, let alone the two that were required. He also asked at this stage if we would like a bucket for the wine. This was then supplied. Waitress No 2 then appeared at various stages clearly with nothing else to do. After the mains, Waitress No 2 then asked if we would like desert to which we replied to give us 5 minutes. She then said no problem. After at least 15 minutes we then saw her with her coat on & left. Since we had not seen Waitress No 1 again that really was our last port of call. Had to go up & ask for the bill as noone was interested & got a service charge added on to add insult to injury. In closing, very happy to support all these businesses to keep them going but this is no excuse for shoddy, inept service & I will therefore not be going back to this establishment for a return visit.

Having seen off the Boxing Day hunt at nearby Petworth Park we were looking for a place to have lunch and I suddenly remembered The Angel Inn and was able to book a table for lunch. Given what a miserable wet day it was this was a relief and it helped that they have the parking area in front of the Inn. The place was buzzing which is a testament to it’s quality. I find the interior of the Inn very appealing and welcoming. Country smart and fresh yet still sublimely cosy. We were shown to our table and had a very attentive young waiter. We ordered a number of things as starters to share between us. The Butterfly King Prawns with Sweet Chilli Sauce and Salt and Pepper Squid were particularly good and would draw one back again just for them. It was a shame that there were quite a number of things which were sold out which we would have fancied such as the Flat Iron Steak, but c’est la vie. The Treacle Tart was a thing of beauty and divine. I think it’s a particularly strong option for lunch in Petworth. Getting small things right like good drinks, bread and nibbles matched with really good attentive service all add to making it a memorable experience, easy to recommend and to return to.

Thank you for your glowing review of your recent visit to The Angel Inn. I am so pleased that you found us and that you got to enjoy everything we have to offer! Thank you for your positive feedback on the menu and the atmosphere of the pub. I will be sure to pass this on to our Head Chef Mark and sorry that items were not available, but that are the risks to work with fresh food. I will also pass your comments on to the front of house team. We hope to welcome you back soon.

We were seated at our table and I had to go and find a waiter after a long wait to order our drinks, other tables that arrived after us already had their drinks on the table. We ordered a mixture of starters and mains to share to come at the same time, and the starters included a portion of chips. The mussels arrived but the chips that were meant to accompany them did not turn up, nor did the rest of the food. We at this point had 2 very hungry children! We ordered a large fish and chips for £16, well the fish was very small and certainly not worth £16!! We ordered a side of triple cooked chips and the chips were not even cooked. No one asked how our food was, no one asked if we wanted additional drinks. It then took a long time for our table to be cleared. I certainly would not recommend and will not be returning. Should have had lunch at the National Trust.

We arrived before 12 for coffee indoors. The table tops were sticky. We moved outdoors for lunch, to a table strewn with old butt-ends on the ground below. The scallops came with a pea purée which tasted unpleasant. The fish & fries were good, but the beef burger was awful: dense, overcooked burger with a stiff overcooked rasher of bacon and a microscopically thin layer of melted cheese, on a bed on lettuce, tomato and gherkin with no dressing at all. The fries were fine. The coffee was served in those awful, heavy Illy cups, a triumph of design over functionality, with circular handles which force your fingers to slip down and get scalded by the heat of the bowl unless you hold the cup in both hands. The toilets are down a short flight of steps in a narrow corridor with a low ceiling, dangerous for elderly people as the steps were barely visible.

Thank you for your feedback, and I can only apologise that your time here didn't meet your expectations. Unfortunately the tables are sticky due to the amount of sanitising they get due to the pandemic, and the only way to solve this is to sand down the tables and re varnish which is something we will look at doing in the quieter months, but with it being our busiest period this is something we cant get done just yet. We know its not ideal, and it is something we are aware of and will get sorted. I am pleased to hear you enjoyed the fish and chips. This and the burger are always firm favourites with our guests, so I am disappointed to hear you didn't enjoy the burger. Did you make your server aware of this? As we would have been more than happy to rectify the problem then and there. Being such a lovely old listed building, we do have a lot of low ceilings, and quaint features, but this does unfortunately mean we cannot change the lay out, and therefore the location of the toilets down the stairs is out of our hands. I do hope this hasn't put you off from visiting us again, as we would like to give you a much better experience here, and show you what The Angel can really do.

We booked a table for 8 for Sunday lunch. Seated in the lower dining room, which was chilly - shame the fire wasn’t lit. We were off the waitresses main path so attention to us was slow and intermittent. Most of the staff who did attend our table seemed lacking knowledge - when asked which lagers were available one server listed real ales, a second server admitted it was her first shift so she did not know which ciders were available but assured us she would send someone who did (this did not happen). We ordered starters and mains. 4 starters arrived promptly… then 2 more… then (when they had all been finished!!) the last one arrived. Delivery of the mains was similar. The roast beef (ordered by 3 adults) came with a very small dish of vegetables to share. Overall a disappointing lunch - £280 bill was most definitely not worth what we received and we will not be returning

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback of The Angel. I'm sorry to hear your experience was far from perfect. I do hope you addressed some of these issues on the day, as we would have been more than happy to rectify anything you were unhappy with. The roast does come with a side of vegetables, however if this was not enough for you and your guests, another bowl would have easily been provided with no hesitation. I can only apologise that he fire wasn't lit. This fire does need to be lit first thing in the morning, as it can be temperamental due to the age and style. It could have been a very busy Sunday breakfast, which may have caused a lack of resources to get the fire going in the morning. On weekends we tend to run a busy breakfast straight in to a busy lunch service, so sincere apologies for this. We are carrying out more staff training in the new year, and the servers do learn a lot as they go. I do hope this hasn't put you off from re visiting us, we would love to be able to show you a great experience.

Ate here on Sunday. The roast is EXCEPTIONAL. Even the red cabbage and parsnips were delicious and nobody likes red cabbage really. The service was warm and friendly, we sat by the fire and my son really enjoyed being told he needed to throw a log on there every now and again. Anyone in the comments here complaining about added service charge need to have a word with themselves .

We are at the Angel Inn on a Sunday evening. We were pretty hungry and thirsty following a very long walk at Petworth House and Deer Park. We were shown to our table quickly but then had to flag down a waiter to order drinks. When our starters arrived the waiter who served us did not notice we had no cutlery and left. Again I had to flag a waiter/waitress down to ask for cutlery which was not handled correctly - forks were held from the top and not the handle. The table was sticky and could have done with a good wipe down and we were served from the wrong side of the table. A waiter had to be flagged down for a third time to order more drinks which we were not offered when our main was served. Luckily the food was pretty good. My venison main was lovely and the apple and berry crumble dessert had the most delicious topping. Shame the service was not up to scratch.

Thank you for your feedback on your time here at The Angel. I apologise the table was sticky. This is actually a result of the cleaners we use to make sure tables are exceptionally clean due to the current climate. We have rectified this, sanding down all our tables and re sealing them, and are now using a different antibacterial spray. Our tables as a standard practice are already laid up with cutlery. The server may have therefore assumed there was cutlery, which is not acceptable, as they should be attentive and aware of all the surroundings, so I deeply apologize, especially with the handling of cutlery. We are embarking on some extensive staff training in the new year, so i do hope you will revisit us soon so we can show you what our usual attentive service is like. Im very happy to hear you did enjoy the food though, so please do come again soon and experience some more delicious dishes.

We came to the Angel Inn to grab some dinner on a weekday evening. The pub was completely empty, just a few people at the bar. Absolutely no atmosphere and the staff were not attentive at all. The food was good but the service was very poor. The manager was rude and looked grumpy from start to finish, not something I would expect from someone in a senior position? We felt very unwelcome and whats more, is that they had the cheek to put a 12% service charge on the bill without asking? Regardless of whether it is optional, it is a cheeky way of guilt tripping customers into paying it. I will definitely not be eating here again and will be advising to friends and family the same.

We had a pleasant meal here today, unfortunately two of us had luke warm, cold in part potato with our pie. They were well presented but not warm enough. Maybe I should have sent the meal back thinking about it. The service was good and the staff were polite but please ensure the whole meal is served at the correct temperature. This is the reason for my judgement. Paying £16+ for this dish I feel you need to ensure everything is served correctly.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us this review. I'm pleased to hear that the majority of your time here was enjoyable. The Steak and Ale pie is a favourite here at The Angel, so I'm very sorry to hear it didn't quite live up to the expectation. I do wish you had mentioned something on the day, and we would have been more than happy to offer some fresh mash, or possibly some chips or fries if you fancied something different. I do hope you will visit us again, we will be changing menus in the not too distant future, so will have some new delicious dishes. Kind regards Sam

I We were recommended this pub for lunch so we drove from London to experience this. It was early, 12.30 ish so not so busy. We were told there were no tables outside, although it was quite empty, pleasant inside though. After ten minutes other guests came who also hadn't booked but they were offered the choice of inside or outside! Bit strange we thought but didn't moan. We then saw other guests were offered a 'specials' menu board but we weren't. I ordered the 'Crispy Aromatic lamb salad', this was not crispy at all or aromatic, it was left over lamb from a sunday roast , which is great but wasn't the salad I thought it would be. Also, the lamb was clumpy and fatty.I spoke to a member of staff at the end and said that constructive criticism is aways useful. said they had to keep tables back for booked guests, makes sense but was confusing as we felt they picked who to suggest that to. The specials board wasn't ready when we got there (only ten minutes later) so they could've suggested that and finally, maybe don't be misleading with the description of the menu. Just say 'lamb salad' which is what is was but I wouldn't have ordered that! Would've been good to offer a complimentary something! Shame.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us some feedback. I'm very sorry to hear we let you down on this occasion. We have a lot of table reservations who specifically reserve tables outside in our courtyard. Our busiest time for service is usually 1/1.30, so a lot of our guests who had tables reserved outside, would not have arrived yet, which is why unfortunately you were not able to get a space outside, and why it also looked seemingly quiet. I'm disappointed to hear you weren't shown the Specials Board, this is a fault on our part, and I have made sure to clarify with all the team that this is not acceptable, and should be show to all tables. We do not have a lamb on our Sunday lunches, only a Beef, so the lamb was not left overs. All our produce is locally sourced and freshly cooked, so apologies you did not enjoy this dish. This has actually been a very welcome dish on our menu, enjoyed by many guests, but was clearly not up to par when you dined here with us. Did you make the server aware of your issue, as we would have been more than happy to rectify the situation then and there, and replace your meal with something else. I can only apologise for not meeting your expectations on this particular visit, and I hope we get the chance to welcome you back in the future, so you can try some of our other dishes, and perhaps we can change your opinion on us here.

Massively disappointing from the start, we arrived at 7.30 and at least 3 staff stood behind the bar but no acknowledgement or welcome. We stood at the till point waiting to be acknowledged and a sullen unsmiling girl initially ignored us, then told us to wait until she had finished stabbing at the screen infront of her. No welcome or smile, when she finally finished, she asked what we wanted. Still no welcome. She pointed at unmade up table and directed us to sit us there. The atmosphere made us feel uncomfortable and we felt we were a complete inconvenience. One of our party ask to swap the new potatoes for chips with the fish cake she ordered, the server came back and told us they wouldn't serve chips with the fish cakes as it only comes with new potatoes? Really! The wine bottle was dumped on the table without being opened alongside two beers by this time we had had enough and immediate cancelled our food order, went to pay for the drinks we had consumed. Just to add further insult they added a service charge to the bill. When we questioned it the staff member asked us why we were leaving and then argued with us. Fortunately we were able to find another near by fabulous restaurant who welcomed us and delivered excellent service and food but is ruined the start of our evening out.

Good morning, Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I’m sincerely sorry to hear you were let down by the customer service you experienced by our front of house team on your recent visit. I completely understand how frustrated you must have felt . Normally our customer service is much more timely and attentive, but it seems that you caught us on an occasion where this was not delivered to your expectations. I’ll be sure to investigate this in details and speak with the staff about your experience so that we can improve going forward. In the meantime I would appreciate you contacting me directly on nishant.barua@petworthplaces.com so we may discuss this matter in further details. I would like to be of personal assistance in resolving your concerns and welcoming you back very soon to the Angel Inn as a valued customer. Kind Regards, Nishant M. Barua General Manager

Due to an unforseen booking glitch my wife and I were directed to this Inn as a last minute replacement to spend the night. The staff could not have been more helpful and pleasant assisting with parking arrangements and making sure our room had all we needed. A comfortable night's sleep and a most enthusiastic greeting from the young lady managing the premises in the morning was followed by a well cooked and presented breakfast, with a menu to suit all appetites.

My wife and I looked forward to returning to the Angel Inn after the latest lockdown. We were quickly shown to a table on the lovely outside terrace, where we were protected from the elements by a large canopy. The staff were cheerful, polite, and efficient as usual! After perusing the new, shorter menu, we chose 2 main courses, which did not fail to satisfy: an aged 10 oz. ribeye steak garnished with a field mushroom, pickled onion rings, and a salad, and roast strip loin beef, with roasted root vegetables, roast potatoes, and a large Yorkshire pudding. But the surprisingly delicious delight was the shared dessert: chocolate brioche bread and butter pudding, caramelised banana, and honeycomb ice cream, which was as tasty as it sounds! A great experience, and so good to be sitting down outside with a proper meal again.

We pre-booked a table for lunch with our sister & hubby. The service was warm, friendly & inviting. The food was amazing, nicely complemented by a bottle of Albariño. We chose mussels, scallops, fish & chips and had to try the rhubarb trifle - Chef Mark and his team did not disappoint us. Thank you Sam, Mark & teams for a lovely lunch....definitely be back 😀
