The dinner choices in John Day range from taverns to brew-pubs. The one exception seems to be the Snaffle Bit Dinner House. Technically it is in Canyonville but that is hardly outside of the big city. The night we ate there, the special was BBQ ribs with all the fixin's. This is mostly a meat kind of place but they... This is our go to place for dinner when we visit John Day. Steaks are perfectly cooked and fantastic! Meals are hearty. The decor and service remind you that you are in cattle ranching territory in the West. Friendly people and great food make for a satisfying end of the day experience.

I had a chicken and cranberry salad which was good. My husband had Malibu chicken and didn't really care for it. I think had we wanted steak, we would have had a very good dinner, but if you'd rather have something else another restaurant might be fine.

Finally had the opportunity to experience the food there after hearing about it from family that eats there regularly. We had made reservations for a large group, and had a great time and a great meal. I really enjoyed the Chicken and Shrimp Pasta dish I had. The portions are generous, the atmosphere fun, and the staff friendly. It's a... More

We were just passing through and spotted this cute restaurant and went inside. We were asked if we had reservations, no.... We'll that's ok, you're early. We asked what was the specialty of the house and we're told of the sirloin topped with bay scallops, shrimp, mushrooms, asparagus and a parmesan cream sauce. Sounded good do I ordered it with... We always try to hit this place on either our way down or way back when traveling in this area, but seldom find it open because of when we go through, so we have to double back and hit another place, which is often the case with finer dining. Have eaten there about 6 or 7 times and it has... More

Despite the positive reviews, the two wet, dirty mops leaning next to the front door should have been a clue of what was to come. My iceberg lettuce salad was limp and brown, I ate the carrot stick on top and left the rest of the unappetizing dish. My fried shrimp were hard and dry...the sort that generally come from... More

Got invited by John Day friends. What a great meal. Very ample portions. Tried the soup, cowboy salad, chicken fetticini, ribs and nachos. There were 15 of us and we all had great meals. They were very busy - we still had great service. Ate on patio.
