My wife and I went to the Arbor House Restaurant last night to celebrate her 73rd birthday. The reviews we’d read raved about the food and we were excited about our new eating adventure. Our table was ready for us when we arrived and we...found the interior cozy, casual, and inviting. The restaurant serves only 3-course dinners including soup, salad, and main course. I ordered the New York strip and my wife got a pork schnitzel dinner. When the soup came we were both a little disappointed. It was a bit bland, but the roles and butter were good and the salad that followed was OK. It was not until I took my first bit of our main course that I knew I was in trouble. It was a good cut of beef, but I have never tasted a more heavily salted piece of meat in my life. But this was the first really special meal out we’d shared together in a very long time and, after waiting nearly a half an hour for the food to arrive, I decided I wasn’t going to ruin it by making issue of it. I was convinced that with the help of my water and bites of mashed potato I could get it down. But then my beloved asked if she could taste my steak. As soon as she put it in her mouth she spit it out and correctly declared it inedible. When the waitress returned to ask about our meal I told her the meat was so salty I couldn’t eat it. She said she would tell the chef and asked if I wanted him to try again. There was no way I was going to let my wife’s dinner get cold while I waited another half hour for a hopefully edible dinner so I declined the offer. The vegetables were excellent and the potatoes were...well mashed potatoes and I no longer had to try to eat any more of the steak so I was fine. We were given one desert to share between us as an apology and, with gratuity, charged nearly a hundred dollars for one glass of wine and two dinners, one of which was inedible. We will not be back. On the way home, borrowing a line from an ancient Frasier episode, we called the dinner our Culinary Hindenburg. We took the meat home and gave Buddy, our Miniature Schnauzer, a few bites. He loved it, though I did notice that twice during the night he had to get up and get another drink of water.More
