Not sure whether to call this Legume or Butterjoint, but either way it's a treat. Clearly a U Pitt faculty hangout, it hits that nice mid-level price point and delivers great food and drink. For those of us from the West Coast, sauerkraut balls were a great new treat, and a bright burst of flavor. Conversely, the cold asparagus and leek soup was gentle, subtle, fragrant and delightful. We also had a solid steak tartar and a truly excellent pirogi and kielbasa plate (hint: if it's real, you can tell from the casing). And for dessert the vinegar pie was sharp and smooth and the pineapple upside down cake moist and bright (though the flambe did not caramelize and the alcohol taste was too strong; I'd simply eliminate this step, cool as it is table side). The drinks were also nicely done, particularly the kumquat and bourbon one. Overall, an excellent meal and a nice experience.

We were looking for a place for a business dinner and selected Legume. Nice menu and delicious food. Highly recommend if you are looking for something upscale!

Our reservation was 6:15 during U of Pitt's family wkend. This restaurant was fairly busy, the informal one was closed. We were seated right away, the server we had was polite and prompt. We ordered 3 appetizers and then had a variety of entrees from steak and pork to sweet potato ravioli. The steak was not as tender as would be expected at that price. The ravioli was nicely done but 6 ravioli patties aren't worth $25. The food was good, not exceptional. The surroundings, service, ambience are nice, not outstanding. Dinner for 4, four alcoholic beverages, no dessert equaled $250+. It wasn't worth that. What I could see about the informal restaurant and that menu looked like a better choice.

We had an early reservation for four on a Saturday night, and enjoyed ourselves very much. The restaurant has a funky vintage vibe (which not everyone loves judging from some of the other reviews) that matches the eclectic menu. The crowd is very diverse, and the room we were seated in (looking out over the sidewalk) was packed on the night we were there. Despite the liveliness, the acoustics are good and it was easy to carry on a conversation. We all loved our cocktails (unique, well-balanced) and the bread was amazing. I didn't love my salad (spinach with an anchovy dressing), but I had ordered fries for the table and those were great. Two of us got chicken-breast-pounded-with-herb dish that was truly wonderful. We finished with a goat-cheese cheesecake, which was terrific. Nice place to meet friends for a fun night out.

Named legume, but items other than vegetables are on the menu - including a huge steak. Interesting menu. Four of us all enjoyed our entrees. Tasting menu available. Cozy atmosphere. On-the-street parking.

I visited this restaurant while unexpectedly in Pittsburgh - lots of places “do” cocktails so it’s become a bit hard to be impressed, but I had the absolute most delicious cocktail I’ve had in years here - am extremely well-made and balanced bourbon cocktail with French vermouth called the “Allegheny”. I also had the chicken liver mousse with a currant jam and the ravioli (these were two rich dishes back to back which I admit was a bit much) - but both were superb. The restaurant does get crowded and can run out of popular dishes depending on the ebb and flow of demand but I can’t wait to come back. And I’m confident if they are out of one dish- there is another one on the menu that will be just as superb! The service was also wonderful - my server, Allison, made wonderful recommendations and truly seemed to enjoy discussing the menu options and wine pairings. Thank you!

We like Legume a lot but wanted something more casual. We found a booth in the back and noticed too late that it needed a coat of paint on the wall. LOTS of little white holes in the dark paint. Hmmm.... who's minding the store? The menu was mainly burgers - not what I expected. But the waitperson (who was pretty good, but failed to show up to take an order for wine to go with the meal - lost opportunity) said we could order from the Legume menu. So we stayed. Our tomato salad was very good. My wife liked her corn chowder. But my steak tartar was below average. Not good. And it came from the Legume menu. So a disappointment.

Was in PIT for a brief time and found this place online. Glad I did. I am a huge fan of all foods involving cherries, and Legume satisfied this in spades. Cherry Soup, followed by cherry-glazed pork, then finished with a cherry tart. Restaurant was a bit loud (boisterous and inebriated group of doctors was immediately next to us), and the service was a tad impersonal. However, the food made up for all of that and more. Recommend.

Visited Legume on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was packed full, we could only get a reservation in for 8.15pm. Pre-reservations are highly recommended. The selection of food options are listed on a single sheet of paper whilst the drink menu was, in a proper folder. Dessert options are, as I was told, on a separate menu. This is a place where dining is not to be rushed. Food preparation is not all that quick. Then again, a basket of bread is served once order for your main course is placed. So, take the time to sit back and chill, be it with your glass of tap water or, a glass of red wine. In all honesty, I don't particularly enjoy dining in dark settings, where I can barely see what I am eating. Somehow too, our table did not have the little candle which every other table had till, we asked for the candle for, some light. Food wise, the fish would be the best option. We ordered the Halibut, Walleye and Chicken under a Skillet. The Chicken was served with some mashed potatoes and that was the only thing I relished. The chicken otherwise, was tough and not so to my liking. Interestingly, this restaurant is nested in a neighbourhood where university students reside. Service of the wait staff was not exceptional for a fine dining restaurant, though still acceptable.

Indeed, the place is not fancy and the dishes not refined. However, the flavors are superb. Clearly, someone in the kitchen knows what he/she is doing. My only gripe (hence 4/5) is service. A little spotty at times. I feel if front of house would have been trained better, this would be a slam dunk 5/5. the bruschetta with kidney beans was delicious. So was the tempeh. First time I truly enjoyed it. All desserts I tried were great. While the chocolate/truffle cake on the heavy side, the goose egg flan was to die for. Prices were extremely reasonable. Definitely worth a repeat.

My wife and I took our college student daughter here for her birthday. The space is very plain, but nice, overlooking the sidewalk. The menu was limited with about 8 appetizers/small plates and 6 entrees. We shared the Hamachi crudo and french fries, both of which were very fresh and flavorful. The Hamachi was very interesting. My daughter had sirloin steak, my wife had walleye and I had the chicken. The food was somewhat simple, but each dish was well prepared, with a sauce that made the dish very tasty and unique. All vegetable sides were also excellent. For dessert we had the tres leches and chocolate cake both of which were very good. The service staff was young, professional and competent, but not particular engaging. It is not cheap, but I felt it was worth it.

I was very disappointed in Legume, a restaurant often mentioned at the top of "best restaurant" lists in Pittsburgh. A new chef has taken reign in the kitchen, but Legume's weaknesses go way beyond a change of chefs. Pittsburgh has issues with restaurant staffing. That was obvious in just our four day visit. The kids hired to commandeer the front have no clue what they're doing, and assign tables with no rhyme or reason. That also happened at Legume, and we switched tables a couple of times. Legume is not an attractive restaurant. With an ugly suspended ceiling, the cavernous space looks like a banquet room in a Holiday Inn. Seat cushions had horribly disgusting stains, as pictured. Nothing has any sense of style. It's bar next door is an infinitely nicer space. Our server was odd. He emphasized what was missing from the menu, and his suggestions really had no culinary basis. In other words, "That's a popular choice," says nothing about the preparation. He went missing for inordinate amounts of time, and if it wasn't for Dorian our busser, our dinner may have lasted days. Dorian should be promoted to manager of Legume. The food tasted less than mediocre. My Raclette, made with cheese from Vermont, was incredibly bland. There's a purpose for a pungent Swiss Cheese usually chosen for a Raclette. It tastes good!!! The chicken liver mousse was overwhelmed by an accompanying currant jelly - very odd. Kielbasa is soul food for people from Wisconsin. Legume's version had no soul. It was as if John Denver sang "RESPECT" instead of Aretha. No thank you. My trout was salty, bland, and literally tasted more like salmon than trout. Maybe that's because the trout was Scottish and wore a kilt. Legume was not good, not fun, and a horrific choice for our last night in Pittsburgh. Legume left us a bad memory and a bad taste of Pittsburgh. My bad.

A nice Bristo to have a dinner. There is enough parking spots (paid) around the restaurant. I loved the food and the lively atmosphere. If you want to surprise yourself then this is the place. Their menu is not standard which makes it interesting.
