We had to reserve early because they had no tables before 9:00. We arrived at the restaurant and weren’t sure if we were in the right place because there is no sign telling you to walk downstairs, and when you do walk down the stairs, there are two metal doors with no sign. Kind of bizarre. There is a large bar at one end of the restaurant, and it was full. There are several beer choices, and it was tough making the decision to drink wine. We skipped lunch knowing this food would be heavy, and it was. Our server was very nice and attentive, and our food was brought to us very quickly. Our fried beef appetizer was good, and my husband enjoyed his chicken schnitzel. However, I was really looking forward to the mussels with fries (moules frites), but they were a bit disappointing. It was a big serving, but the mussels were really tiny, and the fries were just ok. They DO give you three choices of flavored mayo when you order a dish with fries, so that was nice. This is a fun place to go, and there is a large menu and good service. Just be sure to reserve ahead.

While traveling, my husband took me here for my birthday dinner. I should say that we have been to Belgium and know what Belgian food should taste like. This is it! We made reservations for a Friday night and were seated right on time. Someone at our hotel told us that this restaurant has the best atmosphere in all of Greenville. She was right. It is intimate and feels a little secret (like a speakeasy). Our server, Alex, was very informed and gave us his genuine opinions when we asked about which dishes he suggested. We shared the Mushroom Vol au Vent appetizer and it was "to die for!" The sauce on the mushrooms had a very mild sweetness to it that I suspect came from Belgian beer. For entrees, I had the Braised Short Ribs and my husband had the Beef Stew. We were both extremely happy with the quality and flavor. Alex even let me substitute the brussel sprout side dish that came with mine for creamy spinach instead. We did not have alcohol or dessert on this particular night, so our bill came to a mere $63, which is very reasonable for fine dining. The wonderful atmosphere and food did not mean we had to show up super dressed up. My husband wore dress pants and a collared shirt and I wore a blouse and pants and we fit right in. We look forward to returning to try other things on the menu.

Best restaurant that I tried during my trip. How to get there? located in downtown, in Washington St, between S Main and S Laurens St Hours: Monday to Sunday; bar opens at 3 pm, the kitchen at 5 pm, an excellent choice for dinner. Do reservation, this place really gets crowded very easily. Value for money: well, it is not cheap, but what you pay worth it. Service: a little bit slow, but the place was really crowded. When we order everything was very good, the recommendations were excellent, and everyone was very professional. Food & drinks: this place is awesome for having some beers, having a great dinner or both. You will have plenty of beer options if you like beer this is your place to try very good ones. Look on their website, they have incredible choices for you. Related to dinner, I just can say that they know how to prepare a good steak, I ordered a Steak Frites (7 oz Filet), it was incredible, and it comes with a lot of frites with 3 dressings. Honestly the dressings were small portions, my friend tall me that normally they do not put them in a plate but in a small container, so you can dip the frites, but maybe they ran out of them that night, however the 3 dressings were delicious. I did not try them, but they also have mussels, which seems to be the house specialty. Maybe next time, because they also have plenty of options. The place: it is a basement, and it gives you an idea of European pubs/restaurants, a very cool concept. I really like the design; the lights were at the perfect level for the correct mood.

After a lukewarm (at best) greeting at the hostess stand and a wait to be seated, we were beginning to get nervous. As soon as we sat down and Lauren came over, our fears dissipated. She was fantastic with great suggestions and knowledge of the menu and more importantly for the hubs, the beer menu. The Moscow Mule with its homemade ginger beer was a hot for me. Hubs enjoyed his Belgium ipa. Food was delicious. We had the steak frites (one with filet and one with ribeye—fIlet was the fav), moules frites, and the beef short ribs. Since we are family, we shared everything..even the flavored mayos for the fries. The lemon crepe was a nice finish. It has a very cool vibe, reservations are a must because it’s a huge place. Giving 4 stars just because of the rude way we were treated as we checked in. Lauren and food are 5’s for sure...we will be back.

Worth a visit! Good food and great service. This was my second time here and the wait staff makes excellent recommendations and knows their menu and the many Belgium beer selections. I had the short ribs per our waitress’s suggestion and it was fantastic. The beer recommendation was just as good. We were a party of 10 and she took care of our table like it was a table of 4. Mussels, meatballs and fish & chips were all delicious as well. The onion soup was delicious too. Would recommend making a reservation.

We were looking forward to the Belgian beer and mussels and frites on our trip to Greenville. Unfortunately the positive reviews of The Trappe Door didn’t translate into an enjoyable dining experience. When we arrived at our hotel, the clerk recommended restaurants and I mentioned we had reservations at The Trappe Door and he was polite but didn’t respond positively. That should have been my first clue from a local. Then after ordering the mussels our server warned they may not be good this time of year. She said the mussels came from PEI but couldn’t be guaranteed. This took us aback as it is one of their specials. Why serve them if the quality is not up to par? We didn’t know if we should cancel the order or what. Anyways they came and were tasteless and the white wine sauce was flavorless. Worst we have ever had. Buyer beware. This is what can be challenging with relying on online reviews. Better to talk to locals if possible.

So the restaurant is super cool underground in basement. It has a great atmosphere. The food is very good in general but 4 of us went andbi ordered the duck. It came out very rare. I asked for it to be cooked a little more. After the 3 people at our table finished it finally came back about 30 to 40 kinutes later with no apology. It was like they were inconvenienced. I was not happy about that. They did not offer a complimentary drink or discount. After i politely complained I think they gave us a $3.00 credit on a $250 bill. Very dissapointed!

Dining here brought back wonderful memories of mussels we’ve eaten everywhere but here. These mussels were small and tasteless served in a hot broth that was basically hot water with a touch of garlic and a hint of salt. The frites were soggy. The appetizers we selected were good — a farm salad and steak tartare. So we were totally unprepared for the disappointing mussels especially since they’re supposed to be one of the restaurant’s specialties.

We arrived early, descended the stairs to the restaurant below, and took a seat at the bar. The bartenders really knew their stuff and were able to make great recommendations for some of the beers we weren't familiar with, based on our descriptions of the sort of things we like. Once we were seated for our meal, everything was exquisite. The Chef's Board was delightful. The short ribs were juicy, flavorful, and melted in my mouth. My wife loved her mussel pot. The next time we're in Greenville, we'll definitely be back!

Loved the food and ambiance at this unique restaurant. Services was attentive and the variety of Belgium beer was great. For appetizers we had the Buffalo fried oysters and the wild mushroom vol au vont - both different and delicious. Main course was white and blue mussels that came with a choice of 3 dipping sauces. I would like to try their other choices next time but these were savory and outstanding. Duck was other entree and was also very good. When we saw steaks being delivered to other tables knew we should have tried that for sure. Save room for dessert - the Belgian dark chocolate torte is a chocolate lovers dream. Will definitely return to this hidden gem.

This was a super dining experience. The Trappe Door was unique with a really neat thought-provoking menu. We had an outstanding time. Do not expect a fast food experience because it took quite a bit of time to enjoy this meal. Also be aware that you really need to make reservations. The service was Top Notch except for one irritating issue where the server took it upon herself to divide the cost of an appetizer among our two checks for the two couples. That was unprovoked and was irritating but otherwise you could not have asked for a more perfect server. We started with two appetizers, one for each couple. We were all happy. I love mussels and to have a selection of six different sauces on Fresh mussels was premium. Then one must choose the type of flavored mayonnaise to use for the french fries dip again with a huge selection of types. The other couple had the Baked Brie and they were very very happy. All four of us chose a different entree and each of us was quite pleased. I had the Waterzooi which was a seafood entree served the top fresh vegetables. My only complaint was that most of the fresh vegetables were actually just potatoes. My two Pals that were drinkers were very excited at some of the beer selections. I would highly suggest you visit this restaurant. If nothing else check out the menu online.

We had 5:30 reservations to celebrate a birthday. The restaurant wasn't busy yet and there were many empty tables. The 5 of us were taken to a table right by the kitchen and bathrooms. We asked to be seated elsewhere which was easily accommodated. We didn't order drinks (just water)or appetizers and placed our dinner order. After waiting 45 minutes we asked about our meals. Our server admitted that she didn't put our order in right away and it was put in behind a large party. We sat there with empty water glasses and no bread was offered. We finally received our food after 50 minutes and it wasn't even hot. To top it all off we had to ask for more water an0d we were served room temperature water. Eventhough the food wasn't hot it had good flavors but the service was so bad we probably will not go back.

After reading the experiences we decided to celebrate an anniversary at Trappe Door. We had spent several years in Belgium and were looking forward to renewing those memories. Wrong! Our wait person had a really bad attitude, bored to death, and then we waited over an hour for our dinner. People all around us who came in after we did had been served and left. We sat there. Maybe our order got lost, maybe the kitchen was also having a bad night. The wine and pomme frites were wonderful but mussels were very tiny so I think the restaurant was trying to make up for quality with quantity. We had contemplated having dessert but after waiting an inordinate amount of time for dinner, we lost interest and decided to get our check and leave. We did ask about de-caf coffee and were told there wasn't any! Come on folks! Get with it.

We came here for a meal with work colleagues and the restaurant itself is a great spot but that’s where the good portion ended. Between Starter and main course we waited an hour for our food to come out and for a few of us in our party it was not a great experience. My food and two of my colleagues food was lukewarm at best and overly salty. I should’ve sent it back but given the length of time we waited on the food I just wanted to get some food down and get out. I won’t be back

My husband and I frequently visit Greenville just to dine at The Trappe Door. We have tried many dishes but always come back to the white and blue moules frites. The mussel broth is divine and aioli dipping sauces for fries are SO good! The truffle, curry and chimichirri are our favorites. You must have a Belgian tripel or quad to round out the meal. The basement cellar setting is the icing on the cake for this restaurant; 5 star experience EVERY time!
