A Culinary Adventure

We stopped at Hanser House on a whim driving through town and were so pleased we did. Debbie had dental problems and we needed some help. Our server Grier, took excellent care of us. I love Louisiana food and culinary adventures. We were told of a trial recipe that night, Cajun Shrimp and Grits, and I jumped on it. An owner, Heath came by to see how I liked it and we tried a taste of their new Stone Crab Soup as well. The soup was very good, but the Shrimp and Grits were enough for me to travel the 75 miles to Pawley's Island... well quite often.

We came to Hanser House on 9-11-23 around 6pm. We were seated with no wait and immediately ordered. Patty gave us excellent service and our food came out rather quickly. One of us ordered the Grilled Pawley's Platter which was fresh and delicious. The generous amount of bite-sized hushpuppies with whipped butter that came with that meal as an appetizer were delicious and addictive. Two of us each ordered Granny's Grilled Chicken Sandwiches with fries and another side. Absolutely delicious and all 3 meals were the perfect amount of food. We will definitely return on our next trip to Pawley's Island.

Great Cooking - Fresh Seafood

My wife and I had a very pleasant experience having Dinner at the Hanser House last week. We both had a good old fashioned fried flounder and shrimp platter. When this type of cooking is done extremely well as it is at the Hanser House, it is good cooking. Both the flounder and the shrimp were fresh - moist and delicious. All the sides were also great. The service was crisp - but we did not feel rushed - and we look forward to returning.

Pick Someplace Else…

First of all I don’t think they quite knew what to do with someone dining alone! I was seated and given a menu. Then quite awhile later the waiter came over for my drink order…water! Then I sat there for what seemed like forever before someone else came over and asked if I had a drink order already put in…I said “yes, I’m just waiting for water”. Then the waiter finally came back with a glass of water and took my order. I ordered the small plate sea scallops (grilled) with sweet potato and coleslaw. It was tasty but not exceptional and certainly not worth the inflated prices! They charge $1.00 extra because I ordered grilled. Now, please don’t misunderstand, I’m not saying $1.00 is going to break the bank. The point I’m making is restaurants are using any excuse to add to your bill…again ON TOP of the already inflated prices they are charging. The scallops were “okay” but I would argue they were NOT local probably Sysco. What was exceptional were the hush puppies! They would melt in your mouth…and maybe FRIED food is their forte? The sweet potato was steamed (not baked) and served with a cinnamon butter that was good. The coleslaw was “meh”. Would I go back? Probably not. Too many local places that do serve fresh seafood that I would go to before going back here.

Hurry up!

I felt like the goal of the restaurant was to get my table turned in 30 minutes. I had not drunk half a beer before the server offered another one. The salad came seconds after ordering, followed by my crab cake dinner while I still had more than half of my salad before me. The server took my husband’s plate away and asked if he wanted dessert while I still had more than half of my dinner still uneaten. This place may have tradition and all, but they need to slow down and let their diners enjoy the experience. This is the slow season. There were less than a dozen diners in the place and it was only 5:00. We were out of there with the bill paid by 5:35. Not my idea of a $100 meal. Won’t go back.

Worst of the worst!

I notice there are no recent reviews, perhaps because there are no positive reviews since 2014? My husband got a steamer pot of oysters, once you got into the shell, the oyster was approximately the size of jelly bean and so over steamed they were like rubber. I got fried shrimp and fried oysters. It was the absolute worst fried seafood i have ever eaten, if Dominoes served seafood it would be better than Hanser House. It was nasty and dark. If you want a plate of old greasy fried food this is the place for you!

Over 1.5 hours just to get food and terrible service

Time to get seated was 30 minutes, which is fine. They were busy. Not including that time, we waited over 1.5 hours to get our food, however. So over 2 hours just to begin to eat. Everything that should have been hot/warm was closer to cold. Worse, ordered oysters on the half shell and they were sitting in water and just above room temp, so obviously they were on ice which melted before they even got to us. Terrible all the way around. Service was bad and they were in the weeds all night. Front of the house were complaining how they didnt have enough good help, yet continued to accept and seat parties of all sizes, just to have them sit like our party did. When the GM/owner(?) was approached about all of this, she simply stated the service was fine. She was clearly unwilling to acknowledge the deficiencies of the restuarant, despite stating them earlier. I would stay away from here for a while, or atleast during typical busy times. Too many deficiencies to adequately overcome at this time, and management unwilling to appropriately address it.

Excellent seafood

Got an outstanding meal here. My wife and I split the grilled seafood platter. Shrimp and flounder cooked perfectly. Crab cake was loaded with crab. My wife loved the scallops. Hush puppies were outstanding. Great service. Prices are good for the quality.

Wish I could give it a 4.5! Our excellent waitress recommended the grilled Red Snapper, which tasted fresh and had great texture. The grilled shrimp was also delicious. I wouldn't say anything stood out as the best ever, but reliably good food and a mellow atmosphere. Had a nice outdoor waiting area with rocking chairs and bagg-o.

Way too much salt in the food.

The sauce that the mussels were cooked in was way too much salt and so was the broccoli casserole. The stuffed flounder was tasteless and just dumped on top of some stuffing that was also too salty. The meals cost 80.00 and were not satisfactory due to salt content.

Friday Night Prime Rib

Made reservations for a big group (16) heard the Friday Night Prime Rib was great. It was packed! We were put into an upstairs room with two other large groups. Got very hot very quickly. The Prime Rib was very tough, it was the Worst cut of Prime Rib I ever had. Everyone who ordered it in our group felt the same way. Paid a premium price and was Very disappointed. The service was good for the number of people in our group.

Brave the wait and enjoy some really good dining!

As our beach week closed out and we headed back home we decided to exit the Myrtle Beach area by going to Georgetown and back up to I -95 using that route. On the way through Murrell's Inlet we stopped at Hanser House for dinner. We were there at 4 pm so we enjoyed the Early Bird specials, which were plenty for us to eat! The seafood was great, the waitress was pleasant and very efficient. The wait was not bad as there was no wait to be seated but the wait came from the kitchen, which was experiencing a help shortage. (like everywhere else we have dined over the past several months!) The food was worth the wait and we will be sure to return to Hanser House when we visit Myrtle Beach next Summer.

Good Food - Missing Hushpuppies

Ordered pickup for dinner. Got the seafood platter, fish sandwich, she crab soup, and peel & eat shrimp. All meals were very good. The reason for 3 stars is that the hushpuppies advertised as part of the seafood platter were not included. Also, got there at 5:45 which was the scheduled pick-up time. It was not ready and I had to wait 10 minutes for it to be prepared. I ordered pick-up to avoid being around a crowd of people during Covid.

So-So Food, Noisy & Dark

We had heard so many friends talk about how good the food was at Hanser House, so we decided to give it a try. Well, we don't agree. The food was so-so. And it was waaaay too noisy. I do not want to eat anywhere that I have to raise my voice so my husband can hear what I am saying. The only good thing was the service - our waitress was excellent.

Very good family owned and run restaurant

We visit here at least once a week while staying in the area. Happy Hour 4-6 finds us at the bar. Bar specials and petite plates are plentiful. My hubby likes the Creek shrimp and I like the scallops - broiled for $1 extra. The fried onions are amazing as well as the squash casserole. Ambiance good. Waitstaff always gracious and helpful.
