I'm a sucker for donuts. I love the soft, chewy, yeast-y bliss of a freshly baked donut.
I'm from Chicago, and I grew up with Dunkin' Donuts. Then Krispy Kreme hit Chicago and I fell in love with their original glazed (hot off the conveyor...belt, it's still pretty heavenly) and their raspberry-filled.
But then I moved to San Antonio and I discovered Shipley and they rocked my world. As always, freshness is key, but a fresh donut from Shipley was just about my most-favorite thing in the world.
This year, I finally decided to give a little hole-in-the-wall place up in Boerne a try--Snowflake Donuts.
After just ONE visit, this unassuming donut shop owned my refined sugar allegiance.
Why?
* The donuts are flippin' amazing. You offer me a choice of a fresh Snowflake donut or a fresh Shipley or Krispy Kreme donut and I'll pick Snowflake 9 times out of 10. (Sometimes I really just crave a hot KK donut, ok?)
* The staff is the sweetest bunch of people around. Down to earth, patient, and just...kind. That sort of thing goes a LONG way with me.
* And omg, they have MAPLE BARS! What's a maple bar? It's a long-john donut with maple icing on top and it's been SO hard to find in the San Antonio area! KK doesn't have it and I'm pretty sure Shipley doesn't either. (Tip: They'll even fill the maple bar with some filling if you want. I don't, but you might like it!)
* Snowflake has a deep bench. I can't decide which is my favorite donut--the basic glazed, the chocolate glazed, the maple bar, the maple iced with BACON (!!!), or one of the donuts with fruit-flavor icing.
Snowflake also has other delicious baked goods--apple fritters, donut holes, and more.
They also have kolaches, but I'm part polish and I've had real, authentic polish-style kolaches--these bread-wrapped sausage things still strike me as abominations.
I'm sincere when I tell you that I have to use considerable will-power to limit my visits to Snowflake Donuts to just once a week. It's that good.More
