I was all set for a nice dinner at NECI, but was turned away at 5pm since the chef wasn't quite ready. So disappointing!

We made reservations for eight for New Years Eve and was very pleased. Our server was Elijah and he was excellent. We had the multiple course meal including a great desert. All were quite pleased. The French chef visited us twice and he was very charming

Perhaps I didn't order well... ate at the bar and had the salmon/ deviled egg appetizer which was good. The Arctic char main course was very fishy and strong for char. Overly salted.

We stopped in NECI one of the nights of our stay and had a glass of wine with a cheese plate sampler. It was very good. Nice atmosphere. You can talk, and the lighting was very good.

We had business in the state's capital of Montpelier on the day that happened to be my wife's birthday. We wanted something a little special to celebrate the day and we decided to return to this restaurant that held fond memories of about 18 years ago. We were pleasantly surprised that luncheon was at least as good as it had... More

Sometimes splendid, other times not quite right, this restaurant is a fun, unusual, mostly delicious dining experience. Service often not good ( also in training) but the food usually delicious. A unique meal and usually very good.

I have been here twice in the last week because my first experience was great a solid 4/5 maybe a 5. But my second experience was barley a 3/5 so I am very torn. I do understand that the students from the culinary institute are the ones cooking in back so there will be differences depending on who is cooking... More

The freshman class may have been in charge last Saturday. While lovely to look at, the food was not well prepared. The two burgers, while ordered medium rare, were the consistency of a warm hockey puck. I had Fish & Chips (no chips!), a salad and hearty soup. But one good meal out of four is not what they should... More

We ate there in October, 2016. Three of shared the Mediterranean Spread which was very tasty. Two persons had the Braised Short Ribs and one had the Chicken. The Short Ribs were very appealing, visually, but unfortunately were pretty bland and surprisingly somewhat dry. Just not as good as appearing. The Chicken was ok, but not very moist either. However,... More

On a recent trip to the Montpelier area we decided to have lunch at NECI on Main. The food was fresh, local and delicious. I ordered flatbread with caramelized onions, chickpeas and seasoned chicken that was amazing, and he said his burger was cooked to perfection. I would definitely recommend a visit if you are in Montpelier!

Thank Pam L

Imagine the entire state of Vermont as a food experiment or as its own laboratory where food products are grown and created for this particular climate; seasonally, organically, and sustainably. Now imagine restaurants as teaching laboratories this restaurant for instance. NECI on Main is a production lab for New England Culinary Institute. For over 30 years we have been teaching students to make connections with farmers, between the landscape and our food, and between seasons and culinary traditions. Sometimes we include food items that express a particular sense of place from outside of Vermont, or culinary traditions from other cultures, and use those items or experiences to enhance the foods grown here in Vermont. Our menu is no exception in this teaching philosophy, and reflects the best that Vermont’s farmers, and America’s next generation of young chefs offer.
