We tried Freemason Abbey for the first time on a Friday in May 2016. It was adorable and quaint inside... But much less "fancy" than I had thought (given the recommendation for reservations, etc. from the hostess). It was almost like a quaint family restaurant -- with really good food! Appetizers: We shared a bowl of the she-crab soup. Delicious!!!... More

Soft shell crab was in season, and Freemason Abbey does it right! Housed in a 19th century church, there's not a bad seat it be place! The atmosphere, service, and food were outstanding! I look forward to coming back when I next visit Norfolk.

Chose this for special birthday for our adult daughter based on the recommendations and reviews from several other sites. Unfortunately, other than the uniqueness of the building, can't say there is reason to visit. Food was average. Nice presentation but one steak was truly medium, one was medium well, and the prime rib was only a hair from being well... More

This is a wonderful restaurant in an old church, and it's very cozy with a lovely atmosphere. Make reservations, it's a popular place. Never had a bad meal there.

There is a reason the chowder is award winning. it has been one of if not the best in town for 20+ years. Wild game night is very interesting and good, but our family favorite was introducing our boys to eating a whole lobster a couple of years ago. Since then, they want to have it often, but you can't... More

We met several folks here for lunch. Everyone was fascinated by the beautiful building and decor. Our service was quite slow. We had to ask server several times for drinks. She confused orders. One soup had to be sent back because it was cold and she then became short with us. I had always heard this place was fabulous but... More

We stopped in for lunch and enjoyed a very basic sandwich. We found it echoed with other tables. It is a basic lunch place. Being in an old church was its greatest attribute.

What a delightful setting in this beautiful 19th century former church. Unique and lovely. Truly delicious food and reasonable prices. Gracious, caring and attentive service by our waitress Tiffany, who kindly gave souvenir glasses and mints to my companions who were celebrating their anniversary. I enjoyed the house-made veggie burger. My companions really liked their "land and sea" (filet mignon... More

We were in Norfolk to attend the Virginia International Tattoo. In looking for a good restaurant we ran across Freemason Abbey Restaurant. It was originally built as a church. The interior is charming, warm, and hospitable. The staff is great and went out of their way to accommodate us. Our meals were excellent. Because of our limited time in town... More

This restaurant was recommended by a local and it lived up to what we were told. Fantastic food and a neat place.
