From reading some of the poor reviews of the VA Diner I see I am not the only one who feels the same way after stopping in yesterday. The VA Diner has been a staple for tourists and locals alike for many years. A good...majority of their customers were tourists traveling to the beach or OBX. You could always count on a delicious meal such as warm ham biscuits, out of this world peanut soup, their famous waldorf salad with peanut dressing, crispy fried chicken, etc. Now they have a reduced menu, more of a buffett style diner (which is very overpriced) and you wont even find peanut soup on the menu! While I realize COVD has impacted many restaurants, to eliminate such food staples that made you famous in the first place is a big mistake! Now, it seems the VA Diner is riding on its previous glory days coat tails and sadly that is not going to cut it for the long term as folks will ride pass and go elsewhere. My meal yesterday was just average and while I realize food prices have gone up I feel the meals are way overpriced for the quality and quantity. You cannot ride on your name forever.More

Upon learning that this restaurant was featured on Diners, Drive-in, and Dives, I want to try some of the items featured on the show. Unfortunately the hostess had no idea what those items were. However, my waitress was outstanding. She provided me with the information...I wanted. I ordered the fried chicken and catfish combo plate with onion rings and collard greens. The chicken was good and the catfish was excellent. The collard greens were good, but for me a little too sweet. The onion rings were really good. And, every thing was hot., plated right off the stove. The diner offered an all you can eat buffet, but I say order off the menu. I had more than enough on my plate. I also ordered some country ham biscuits to go. I ate them the following morning for breakfast. I only wish I had room for some peanut pie. This was a chance visit, but if I ever am in this areas again, I'll be back. The food was good and my waitress was exceptional.More

My husband & I went there for lunch. Our waitress was uncaring, never asked us if we needed refills on water or tea. We had BLT, chips, Club Sandwich, fries, sweet tea and Peanut pie. We shopped in the gift shop & bought a can...of Chocolate covered Peanut Brittle, which was superb and was gone in 2 days !!!!! The waitresses were in a back room, chatting, laughing & hanging out, while we sat, ignored. Someone was setting up white tents outside for a special function on the parking lot.More

We stopped in on a Sunday and most customers were eating off the buffet. We were sat at a table 3 feet from the start of the buffet with people on top of us most of the meal. Restaurant was packed. We ordered four meals...off the menu: - Salad with grilled chicken: The chicken was excellent. Veggies were fresh. presention was average. Little things like improving on the croutons would make it better. - Cheeseburger was excellent. - Kids chicken fingers were poor. Breading was almost like a tempura, fell off the chicken when they tried to eat it and was wet and greasy. - Turkey club was average. So bottom line ... not a lot of options in the area when passing through. Stop here to avoid fast food or if you want an inexpensive buffet.More

Without a doubt this was the absolute worse crab cake (on a bun) I have ever endured. It was flat, it was wet and where was the crab meat or seasoning? Even my husband wouldn't eat it. We shared the club sandwich, which both of...us can highly recommend. I'd stop there again just to get that and the potato chips. We placed our order to go and saw that it was ready but had to ask someone to get it - too long of a line at the register. And some of the folks were just downright grumpy.More

The Virginia Diner continues to be one of my favorite spots to eat. I had an excellent Barbecue sandwich with very tasty onion rings. My wife had a vegetable combination. She loved the carrot casserole and green beans. The sweet tea is also excellent.

We drove two hours to eat at the Virginia Diner today, and boy, were we disappointed! We've eaten at the Virginia Diner for years and years, but no more. The decor has been updated (after the restaurant was flooded I assume), but the menu has...been significantly reduced. We went for the country ham - the only time I ever eat country ham is here - but they don't have it anymore. Right in the heart of country ham country, but they no longer serve it. Ham and biscuits? No longer as a meal - just an overpriced side. My favorite stewed tomatoes? No longer on the menu. Their delicious Waldorf Salad? Sorry - we're out of the peanut topping. I moved on down the menu to the fried chicken - sorry, we're out of fried chicken. Grilled chicken sandwich? Nope, out of chicken altogether. We gave some thought to leaving but again, we'd driven two hours to eat there, so we settled for BBQ and another favorite - carrot souffle. Even this dish was subpar - not heated all the way through. The only good I can say about this dinner was the server was attentive and apologized profusely that "we just aren't what we used to be." Amen, sister, amen. After 50+ years of traveling to eat here, we won't be back.More

I don't know what happened but not only has the diner food gone downhill so are the peanuts they sell. I've noticed a gradual decline the last several years. The last peanuts I bought were mealy and so bad didn't finish the can. We usually...bought several hundred dollars worth each year but no more. There are other (and better) companies in Wakefield. Save your time and money, don't stop here.More
