It's not often that you can have lunch in an authentic 18th century tavern. When you're in Williamsburg you can. The food was great overall and the the beers were good too. The atmosphere is authentic to the period. My only complaint is that we...More

I’m spending a week in Williamsburg, and this is my third meal at Chowdings. Each has been just fine. The first time, I had “Bangers and Mash.”they were lovely, English-type sausages, with a rich brown gravy over excellent potatoes. This was topped with sautéed onions....More

Unfortunately we were nestled between several groups of 25+ including school groups. It seems we were literally left out in the cold. Us and a few other couples who had been waiting for 30 minutes were surpassed by 2 very large groups who arrived after...More

Thrilled that we made the choice to eat here instead of a place in the shopping district. Loved everything about this place! I was absolutely born in the wrong era. Staff were awesome, the food was delicious and the atmosphere outstanding. This was during Thanksgiving...More

We were off season, so the place was not busy at all. I can imagine this place is hopping during the Spring/Summer months. Unique atmosphere and staff is in time appropriate costumes. We just had a snack of wings and a beer flight. Fun flight,...More

Best I can do is say this place is average. Food and service were good but not outstanding. Typical place you would expect in a tourist attraction.

We've been here several times over the years, but not for quite a while. Whether because it was off season or just lost luster this visit was a let down. They apparently no longer do any entertainment or games, and the menu is a shadow...More

Step back into colonial days with servers and musicians dressed in period costume seeking to recreate a authentic 18th Centruy tavern experience. The menu for lunch is limited with few gluten free options, but the shepherds pie made with lamb was tasty and piping hot....More

One waiter Mark made the most fun of times for us. Dressed in period costumes and in an original building that was the high light of our lunch. The best thing we had were the house chips with dipping sauces. I spared no expense and...More

Chownings always has a game going on in the evenings. They are simple games from the 1700s so don’t expect a “wow”factor. They are simple fun for adults. They are traditional games that the average “Tavern goer” would be... More

Gather ‘round at Chowning’s Tavern for hearty, Colonial-inspired pub fare, all served up in an authentic alehouse atmosphere. Try favorites of our founding fathers, including savory Shepherd’s Pye and satisfying trenchers served in bread bowls. Make friends with fellow diners over a frothy pint, or enjoy an ale outside in the beer garden. Want to take a piece of Colonial Williamsburg home with you? Order a local craft beer and keep the traditional salted mug. If you’re in need of a quick bite to fuel your day of exploration, stop by Chowning’s Garden Grill between 11am and 4pm daily for burgers, sausages, stew, BBQ, salads, and sweet treats.
