We wanted the tavern experience without the huge price tag. The food was pretty good without breaking the bank. We arrived early for dinner at 5:30 p.m. and were seated within 5 minutes. If you prefer eating at peak hours in the candlelight, make sure...More

They offer a terrific menu here and there are plenty of good waiters and waitresses who are happy to accommodate your requests.

This place is busy! We were waiting in line when it opened and that was a good call. We didn't have a long wait for our food. Our kids tried the soups and liked them. My husband and I enjoyed the Ploughman's platter. The dining...More

First, just remember this - you have to put your name in with the host so don't expect to walk up and get a table immediately during busy times of the year (ex. spring break, holidays). We were told 1 1/2 hours wait but it...More

Our kids really wanted to eat in a tavern. The first day we got there at 12:30 and it was a two hour wait. The next day, we went when they opened at 11:30. There was already a line. They told us 30 minutes, and...More

We went at around 5 pm so there was no wait. Waitress was pleasant. We had hot turkey sandwiches. I wouldn't recommend them. They weren't hot. The cheese had been melted but it is not a hot sandwich. The bread/roll was not good and way...More

For 16 years this was the best tavern in Colonial Williamsburg. The reason for that is the entertainment that could be found there. The balladeers have been wonderful and their knowledge of 18th Century music and the instruments is incredible. They are dedicated and committed...More

Description
Gather ‘round at Chowning’s Tavern for hearty, Colonial-inspired pub fare, all served up in an authentic alehouse atmosphere. Try favorites of our founding fathers, including savory Shepherd’s Pye and satisfying trenchers served in bread bowls. Make friends with fellow diners over a frothy pint, or enjoy an ale outside in the beer garden. Want to take a piece of Colonial Williamsburg home with you? Order a local craft beer and keep the traditional salted mug. If you’re in need of a quick bite to fuel your day of exploration, stop by Chowning’s Garden Grill between 11am and 4pm daily for burgers, sausages, stew, BBQ, salads, and sweet treats.
