When we walked in, it felt like we just walked into someone's kitchen. There was a very welcoming lady that gave us menus and seated us. She was also the chef, cashier, and also bussed tables. We ordered papaya salad and two types of curries. Wow! I felt like this meal was prepared by family! You can literally see her... More

I like the food in general. I think the pad thai is the best in town. The prices are also reasonable. Somsamai is known for her green papaya salad. The only reason I gave it a 4 star is because the hours are not consistent.

The food here is not only reasonable, but very yummy! We got the larb salad, papaya salad, and pumpkin curry and enjoyed it all. We look forward to eating here again.

Hungry for lunch we did a quick internet search and decided to give this little Thai place a chance. We were glad we did. Hands down the best Thai Iced Tea we have ever had! We both enjoyed curry dishes and split an order of spring rolls. The food is cooked by a little Thai lady right there in the... More

This place is beyond good, as the saying goes; "It's GRRREAT" The food is fresh, portions are good, and MOST IMPORTANT...the food is "ONOLICIOUS" !!!! The location is a bit hidden in downtown hilo, but the search is MORE than worth it. I had the green papaya salad and my friend had the pad thai noodles, we shared and it... More

Good ingredients make the food. Excellent cooking to go along with it. Very satisfying lunch (on days they're open), and good prices.

We found this place while searching on foot for lunch in Hilo. We decided to go in after a woman who was coming out of the restaurant told us in passing, "the food here is amazing!" Her statement was spot on. Inside we found a very open layout with the dining area and kitchen next to each other, and the... More

If you stopped next door (Moonstruck Patisserie) put this on your list for lunch. Maybe the best pad thai I have ever had. The yellow curry was also great. It smells so good when you walk in. A previous review said it feels like eating in your neighbor's kitchen (a a negative). I LOVE that! There's nothing like a true... More

We first tasted Somsamai's food at the Maku'u Market (Sundays, Puna, near Pahoa). We soon became spoiled by the freshness, complexity and downright deliciousness of the food and the friendliness of the chef. When Somsamai opened this little restaurant in Hilo we were thrilled to have a reliably delicious place to go when we were in town. Soon, this became... More

I work in Hilo and come here often. The selection of dishes is limited, but if you love spring rolls, papaya salad, Thai curries, and soups, this is the place to be. The chef grows much of the produce she uses. When she asks if you want mild, medium, or hot, you can watch her throw chiles and other items... More
