This institution has history - the "A Cavalli & Co" business started back in the 1800s and was a library that people would come from far away to visit. There's a great set of photos on the wall that show the various locations from the first to now. Approx ten years ago the current owner bought it from the original... More

Please go and seek this place out for their Connoli - beautiful and fresh with ricotta!! This was one of our stops in a walking tour and came highly recommended!

I ordered a cup of cappuccino and a plain croissant and also a small chocolate cookie. It was good. Not too expensive. Paid cash. Nothing special really. It's good for a quick light breakfast.

Ambience needs some work. Very plain colors and decor. Average coffee and pastry. Will do in a pinch. Bathroom could do with an upgrade.

Went for breakfast and so glad we did. I wasn't sure about it when we walked in because they only accept cash.. The food was great and very fresh, and the lattes we had were the best we had on our whole trip to san francisco..

We just stepped in because we wanted a water. But seeing the professional coffee machine let us try an espresso. It was perfect. Really Italian, not American style. Very good beans. It you like to have a sweet thing beside your coffee it is also available. I haven't tried any other meal offered but will try next time. Very nice... More

Stopped in on Christmas Day on the referral of one of the local policemen. The croissants with salami, prosciutto and cheese were outstanding. The iced coffee however was overly sweet and the service very slow. I am sure it was because of the holiday, but kind of bummer but a fun place to try during our visit. Thanks!

A close friend called me up for a quick coffee in Little Italy, North Beach neighborhood, in San Francisco. One of the best living areas in the United States as denoted by US World Report! He wanted to meet me at Cavalli Café. It used to be a book store, but now converted into an European Italian Café. It was... More

It does not get much better than this! Excellent breakfast sandwiches, coffee and desserts!! It was a nice way to start the day with genuine, polite and friendly people... before running into so many rude Americans in San Francisco.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
