Had visited just once before, but then visited twice over the Christmas and New Year period - each a delight. Food to me is unmistakengly French/European which is nice when away from home. Wine pairings also worked well - even if lack a little inventiveness (No Sauternes recommended with foie gras?) Watch the (obvious) upsell on truffles, caviar and foie... More

We have gone to La Folie for years. Many times for special occasions (such as my birthday dinner in the blue room for 20 I think...) anniversaries, as well as just for dinner. We usually love the well executed menu which is lovely but not stuffy? Chef Passot when he is there seems to be a great driving force. We... More

My husband and I dined here the night before our wedding. Still to this day, we talk about our dinner here! The staff was so gracious and went above and beyond to ensure we had the best meal. They even threw in a couple of free courses as a congratulations for our marriage and we met the chef after our... More

The day after our meal at La Folie I could have written a detailed account of the flavors -- the frog's legs, the lobster, the wonderful bottle of Meursault -- but a month later (and with no help from a receipt that just says "Three Course Menu" all I can remember is the ecstasy. The flavors were rich and yet... More

"Wild horses couldn't drag me away". Just as I was preparing to write this review, the Stones song came on Pandora. Perfectly said. Classic French Cuisine by a A master Chef. Rolland Passot. Few places can you still see the Masters or " Celebrity Chefs" submerged in their art like this man. Despite his fame , he remains in the... More

While there were some good dishes (the frog legs and snails with bone marrow was excellent), most of the food was decent but nothing to write home about. The lamb was not very flavorful, the pigs feet/lobster terrine didn't meld well together, and the shaved truffles were bland and musty tasting. I had a fabulous Truffle Risotto the night before... La Folie's tasting menu can only be described by one word: EXCELLENT! Truly one of the best ever! Decadent, Delicious, Outstanding, Sophisticated. Chef Roland Passot’s Summer Tasting Menu is expensive ($150 + 95 for winepairing), but it is worth every penny. Service was professional and kind. Restaurant surroundings was cozy, relaxing and classic. All in all a perfect place to... More

Our favorite French restaurant in San Francisco. We had a memorable anniversary dinner with foie gras, snails and frogs legs, rabbit, lamb rack- rare, and cheese souffle. They have some new dishes like the snail and forgs legs which were wonderful. For the qualify of food, the prices are reasonable in that you can get a five course dinner for... More

Only thing missing was the Effiel Tower. While very spendy, likely the best meal we've had in many years.....and I've done international travel for 30 years. The dinner offerings were very interesting and outstanding in flavor. Wine list excellent. I can't remember better service......especially our lead waiter. While we'll remember my wife's 70th birthday we'll remember our dinner more.

About 10 or so years ago, I asked a taxi driver to name his favorite restaurant in SF. He said "La Folie". I remember hearing him say two things about it that left an indelible impression: 1) that it was consistently among the top places to eat in SF. 2) that it was the most requested restaurant destination in his... Staying in Russian Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
Russian Hill
Russian Hill has evolved into a chic residential neighborhood with outstanding views from every corner. Combined with several great cafes, restaurants, antique shops and boutiques, it’s easy to see why any visitor would gladly leave their heart in San Francisco. Cars line up day after day to drive down Lombard Street, the “crookedest” street in the world, and make the slow creep downhill past charming period homes. Polk Street is the main drag in this neighborhood, where you will find trendy bars, cafes and shops populated with locals, but for one of the most charming rides in the city, grab a cable car heading up and down Hyde Street.
