Friendly place, GREAT FOOD. Casual, Unpretentious. Cold draft blows through when the front door is open so come prepared with a coat or sweater. High San Francisco prices, expect minimum $25 + per person. I loved my seafood risotto ordered at lunch and there was enough leftover to enjoy it again for supper. Staff was accommodating about wrapping the rest... More

Great cozy and friendly Restaurant with good food. The sand dab was not as flavorful as Scoma's, but the seafood linguine was out of this world! Clam chowder was very tasty! Sitting inside and watching the open kitchen was fun, but I don't like the cooking grease. I would sit outside if it's warm next time. No desserts but they... More

Stopped in on a Thursday night, as we were told by locals that Friday night would require up to an hour or two wait since we couldn't get reservations for two. Only had a 30 min. wait and it was well worth it. Had the prawn cocktail and cioppino. All was incredible, especially the cioppino. A nice tomato'y based soup... More

Absolutely, without question, the most delicious bouillabaisse I have ever had! The owner himself came to the curb, moved a "no parking" sign for me, & said I could park there in order to eat at his restaurant. The food was plentiful, fresh, and delicious! Definately worth any wait or price!!

Recommended to us by locals on the subway..... We sat at the bar and watched the chef's prepare dish after dish of the most amazing looking seafood/Italian. We had their version of scampi. The greatest thing since sliced bread! Prices were what they should be for quality seafood. Enjoy!

We came to this little restaurant following recommendation in our SF travel guide. We normally like to try out different restaurants, but the Cioppino at Sotto Mare was so good that we had dinner twice during our 4 days stay in SF.

In a restored building on Green Street, restauranteur Gigi Fiorucci has created his best establishment yet. A very colorful and lively seafood house that claims to have the best damn cioppino . It certainly does. The clam chowder with bacon is a must try starter for cold evenings. The best seats in the house are right in front where the... More

Food here is SOOOOOOOOOOO good. By far the BEST crab I have ever eaten. If you want good crab, skip those touristy places on the Wharf or Piers and go to Sotto Mar!!! My daughter had muscles and clams and wouldn't share because she said they were too good to miss even one! We will always visit this restaurant whenever... More

Been coming to Sotto Mare and sending friends and family here for many years Was not impressed with the food this last visit The oysters did not smell or taste fresh The cioppino was a mess, looked like it was cooked a week before. The red sauce was brown from over cooking, the fish and shellfish over cooked and tough... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
