The food is to die for - so fresh and tasty. We tried the chowder, risotto and sand dab (flat fish) and everything was amazing. Portions are large so you could definitely share. And service was great :) glad we found this place!

Honestly I was expecting more. The room is cool it has a great feel. The food for me was over done. I think the menu and the way the food is prepared needs to be updated. Less sauce, lighter.

We planned a date night in San Francisco including dinner and Beach Blanket Babylon (I will review that next). This is a small restaurant a minute from the theater. We sat at the counter which added to the experience since we could see the workings of the entire restaurant in front of us. We started with the crab appetizer. It... More

What a find - by accident we came across Sotto Mare - which had tables of local Italians outside sharing lunch - a good sign. The wait was 10 minutes and well worth it to sit at the bar and have delicious oysters and share the best Cioppino in town. I only ate Cioppino once last year its the San... More

I had a wonderful lunch at Sotto Mare. I asked for, and received a double order of dungeness crab salad, and it was fantastic. With some great Italian bread and a beer, I left happy. The menu is primarily seafood and pasta. Everything that was served around me looked fantastic. The service was great and the staff are friendly.

This is a crowded place with great service. I had the opportunity to share a Cioppino with a friend and it was amazing. Next time I visit San Francisco Sotto Mare is on my top todo list. After the dinner it´s a short walk up to Coit Tower to enjoy the view of San Francisco by night.

This small restaurant has great service and even better food. You can get individual east coast or west coast oysters, variety of salads and great entrees. You have to get the cioppino. It could feed 2 but you may not want to share. The crab diablo pasta was excellent and still didn't hold a candle to the cioppino.

We came for dinner with a party of 6. Even though the place was crowded and crazy busy the host was amazing... we were seated in the downstairs dining area. Shared the Cioppino for 2 with a friend. Lots of great homemade bread to sop up the last drop of the amazing sauce. Food and service were off the charts... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
