Fresh crusty bread rolls with delicious fillings all made to order. Very large sandwiches. Hot and cold options. All at a very good price. We'll worth a visit.

Sometimes, when I want to treat myself, like tomorrow, I’ll go in early & treat myself to one of Big Al’s subs. The problem is which one! Too many good ones! I probably get a steak & cheese. It’s the best & a treat I don’t usually get unless I go to Big Al’s. Yea, that’s what I’ll do.

Al's has some of the best lunches in the Financial District. They have excellent subs, both hot and cold. For hot, try the meatball parm. For cold, try the italian cold cuts. They also have a terrific antipasto salad. The service is quick. This restaurant is mostly take out, with a few counter stools near the entrance. The people working... More

Working in Downtown Boston, you will quickly come to realize that Als is a frequented spot for the locals. This place is packed on a typical day around lunch time although the service is very fast and efficient. As other reviewers have stated, the subs are very large and a small sized sub will be more than enough for somebody... More

I really enjoyed my sub! All the ingredients were very fresh. It's a very loud and boisterous place, but also very friendly and homey. The price was really good to! I was told by who I think must have been the owner that they were the best prices in boston.

Al's State Street Cafe gets it right with traditional, hearty, old-school deli style sandwiches. Immensely popular with several locations. Buy one hero and share with a friend; it's more than enough. Food is fresh and tasty. No frills, counter dining. If you like atmosphere, order to go.

We go to Al's every one in a while when is nice out to get great hot subs. Meatball & Chicken Paris are fantastic and the bag lunch is a great deal!!! Favorite of the locals for sure.

To be honest, I haven't tried many of their sandwiches, maybe three different ones. That's because I always crave the South Street, a cold sandwich with basil, mozzarella cheese, balsamic vinagre and prosciutto. Never fails. I often buy the large one and share, half of it is more than enough for a meal. The times I've bought a different one... More

Al's makes fantastic sandwiches in the style of "subs" (submarine sandwiches) I grew up on from a Boston area Italian grocery store. This place is one block from Fanieul Hall and two from the Aquarium making it a reasonably priced place to pick up a sandwich. Large enough to share. It is pretty much a take out place but there's... Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
The largest area of the city, Downtown is rich with historical and iconic sites in Boston. Stroll through one of Boston’s most famous green spaces, the Boston Public Gardens, check out and make way for duckling statues, picnic under a beautiful tree overlooking the pond, and walk over the iconic footbridge where, during summer time, you will catch a swan boat toting children and eager tourists through the pond. Have your camera ready to capture its peaceful beauty in the middle of a bustling city. Continue on through the Gardens and take in some open green space at the Boston Common, where you can spend time throwing a frisbee, sitting on a park bench, or, in the winter time, skating on the frog pond. Head north from the end of the Common to see the golden dome of the State House, and travel through government center to Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall, both a historic and popular destination worth a quick visit for a first time to Boston. Head to Long Wharf to visit the Aquarium, or catch a boat to Charlestown or even Cape Cod.
