Im a culinary student who loves a great bite to eat. When my friends come to town, I always recommend going to Jacob Wirth for the best chowder in the city. Yes, its a German restaurant in the middle of China Town, but its wonderful. The restaurant offers a great environment, attentive service, and some of the best value for... More

We had a reservation for a large group of people on a busy Saturday night. Service was great, food was excellent, prices of food and drink were very reasonable. Would definitely go back on next visit to Boston.

So, we went to this place because we really were missing German food. We moved to Boston last summer after living for 5 years and Germany, and I'm sorry to say that it was a huge disappointment. We started off by ordering two Hofbrau beers and they just had an odd taste. It seemed flat and there was an odd... More

There are not many options for German food in Massachusetts so when I found out about this place I was excited. Having spent my middle and high school years working in a German/Austrian deli/butcher, I was eager to indulge in some German food. However the tastes simply weren't there. The people there are great but I came for the food.... More

it's location, right in the BostonTheater District, and it's quaint beer hall atmosphere make Jake Wirth's a favorite for locals and tourists alike. Opened in 1868, but I think the proprietor is from Mexico now. So be it. I had the German version of sausage, egg and cheese sandwich (Wiesbaden Toast) and for lunch (until 4 pm) the price is... I guess this is a bit of a Boston landmark but like many such places, it seems trapped in a time bubble. Food was average. A good selection of German fare, as one would expect. I was brought a plate of cheese ravioli instead of the spare rib ravioli special. They did comp me the plate but still - to... More

Very busy and noisy. Definitely make reservations. Interesting beers. German food is good while I had the barbecue steak tips which was just ok. The potato pancakes app was great.

Stopped by after seeing the Boston Pops concert in the mid-afternoon. JW was buzzing with a moderate number of people having lunch. We were sat immediately in the middle of the upper portion of the restaurant which we really liked. We ordered a couple local beers for the adults and shirley temples for the kids. The menu is well balanced... More

We saw a show at the Wilbur Theatre, which is right around the corner. We stopped in for some apps and some beers. They always have an excellent selection for beer lovers. Food is good and inexpensive. Pretzels were hot and soft. Quiet yummy. Have had dinner here in the past prior to a show as well. Noisy environment when... More

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown
The largest area of the city, Downtown is rich with historical and iconic sites in Boston. Stroll through one of Boston’s most famous green spaces, the Boston Public Gardens, check out and make way for duckling statues, picnic under a beautiful tree overlooking the pond, and walk over the iconic footbridge where, during summer time, you will catch a swan boat toting children and eager tourists through the pond. Have your camera ready to capture its peaceful beauty in the middle of a bustling city. Continue on through the Gardens and take in some open green space at the Boston Common, where you can spend time throwing a frisbee, sitting on a park bench, or, in the winter time, skating on the frog pond. Head north from the end of the Common to see the golden dome of the State House, and travel through government center to Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall, both a historic and popular destination worth a quick visit for a first time to Boston. Head to Long Wharf to visit the Aquarium, or catch a boat to Charlestown or even Cape Cod.
