If you like authentic Japanese food, it is worth checking out. The owner/cook makes everything to order. The menu is extensive, especially considering the small staff and tiny kitchen - which is right in the middle of the restaurant. If one hangs out at the bar, you can chat with the owner and watch her prepare the dishes. Excellent sake... More

Very casual Japanese izakaya. Reasolable price and food. Good for student get-together. I would not vist here from Midtown.

This place is great. The homestyle Japanese cooking is amazing. The atmosphere is really laid back..Order a few dishes at a time - get the specials (I think they are updated daily), drink up (shouchu of course (they have a great selection of rice, potato, and cane sugar shouchu), and take your time. You'll love it.

Very Village casual. Nice home-style vibe. Tasty food - that's the main thing. Friendly owners and staff. Not expensive. Could use some sprucing up. The music was too loud for easy conversation. But my date and I had a fun time. I will go back.

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
