This restaurant is very small so you may want to make reservations. It is very cramped during peak times. The bathroom is also very small. Food: I got the bangers and mash and it was good, the ginger tea was good. There are some specific rules that hinder you from saving money, for instance one tea pot person. 😒 see... More

I like to visit whenever I'm in New York, because it does tea properly, and you can get British biscuits and jelly babies from the shop next door. (Although the prices are higher than they are in Australia, which surprises me.) It seems to be run by a group of British and Australian ex-pats, so it's not that surprising you... More

Interesting little shop sandwiched between the restaurant Tea & Sympathy and the Fish and Chip shop this is the heart of the Tea & Sympathy brand. All good fun and lively it is stacked with presents for all those anglophiles or homesick brits in NYC.

If you're from across the pond eventually you'll need some real chocolate. Once you have English chocolate you'll probably not enjoy the waxy Mexican made American version. I've never met a UK person who said otherwise. How about some HP Sauce? Check! Pudding? Check! This is a store. The tea time place is next store, The reviews are a little... More

Go to Myers of Keswick! Do not support this place!! I live ACROSS THE STREET and I will NEVER come here or recommend it to anyone again. More than two months ago my English friend who lives in SC told me she was coming to NYC and bringing her elderly mother who walks with a cane. She REALLY WANTED TO... More

Having lived abroad in London for the last year you quickly miss a good cuppa and proper bacon, non of this streaky stuff. This is my second time to Carry on Tea & Sympathy and it will be a tradition for every visit to NYC. It's a small, quaint shop in Greenwich Village run by off the boat Brits. The... More

Before coming here I was excited to come and stop by. Sadly, I was in a rush and went to the shop next door that seemed to be connected to this shop. When I first came in, I saw old boxes waiting to be put outside and a very noticeably uncomfortable young woman trying to leave as quickly as possible.... More

I hope the US don't think this typical of an English tea room ,... More

We remembered Tea and Sympathy after finding a clip about it from "Victoria Wood's Nice Cup of Tea." My sister had been wanting a teapot and could never find a nice one at a reasonable price. We first visited the store, Carry On Tea and Sympathy, in January and she finally had her teapot, which is frequently used. The man... More

Description
British comfort food in a cozy Greenwich Village location.

The Scene
Decked out like an exaggerated version of a suburban British living room--tacky wallpaper, an extensive teapot collection, lots of ceramic figures, Vera Lynne on the stereo--Tea & Sympathy serves as a cozy home away from home for expats. Sometimes it's a little too cozy, in fact; space is limited, and you can expect to be moved around during your meal to make room for other diners. The friendly but no-nonsense waitstaff is always ready with a smile and a comeback line.

The Food
The menu offers perfect renditions of such Brit classics as Welsh rarebit (thick bread with melted cheese, tomato and mustard), steak and kidney pie, Scotch egg (hard-boiled egg, deep-fried in pastry), tweed kettle pie (trout and cod wrapped in bacon and served in a pie) and bangers and mash (sausages and mashed potato). Any one of these will fill you up for the day; for those on a diet or just faint-hearted, there are lighter sandwiches and salads, too.

Staying in West Village

Neighbourhood Profile
West Village
Stretching from Sixth Avenue to the Hudson River, the West Village is one of the city’s most coveted addresses. Full of trendy shops, historic taverns, and cozy restaurants set amid 19th century architecture, this neighbourhood has a unique old-world feel. You won’t find a more picturesque location in Manhattan. Without the traditional city grid layout, it’s easy to get lost here, but that’s part of the fun as you stroll down elegant narrow streets with beautiful brownstones. When you need a break, you can always stop in at one of the many quaint eateries or cafes to soak in the atmosphere, or head to the western edge of the neighborhood to enjoy magnificent waterfront views while taking a leisurely walk in Hudson River Park.
