great little spot for a delicious bite of lunch, nice selection of freshly prepared options; the staff more interested in their electronic devices and could use some proper customer service training; perhaps they are too cool for that. tiny tables and chairs, squeeze in if you can, might be a better idea to order 'to go' and enjoy your meal... We were trapped in a Lord & Taylor Dept. Store in Manhattan while a thunderstorm passed through. While killing time we asked a store clerk if she or her fellow workers could recommend a local restaurant for lunch. The tiny Piccolo Cafe was their unanimous choice. We had the turkey panini with a cup of chicken/vegetable soup. I suspect they... More

My husband and I happened upon this charming cafe on Madison between 37th and 38th Streets last Sunday morning, and couldn't be happier that we did. Although the place is decidedly on the compact and cozy side, the menu options were so extensive that we struggled to choose just one apiece. We ended up sharing two open-faced croissant sandwiches topped... More

The restaurant empty when we arrived. And by the reception we received, the proprietor (or waiter) preferred it to stay that way. We could feel the ice. After being advised to order at the counter we waited for our dinner noticing, I believe, a reference to the establishment being open since 1938. Well, we are accustomed to the modern fashion... Amazing place to stop for a coffee and eat a good gluten free brownie. Price is good and the coffee is excellent. The place cool to hang out with friend or just chill

A while back, I was a regular at this cafe, grabbing coffee and the occasional croissant sandwich, treat, etc. However, I could never shrug off the ill feeling of rude service. The owner is friendly, but the lady in the front is consistently rude for no reason at all.

Went out looking for something to eat before exploring the city, and found this place. Wow! Good people, and great authentic Italian food. Worth a visit

Love this place! Super charming and feels like an escape from the city. Great coffee, very reasonable prices. Awesome breakfast sandwiches!!! Really nice and friendly staff as well. I bring all of my out-of-town friends to their 74th Street location.

Description
We proudly serve you all the best Italian paninis and gourmet food, and of course, our staple coffee. That's what we call the "real deal!" It is our mission to serve you the best Prosciutto, Mozzarella, Burrata, Gnocchi, as well as delicious paninis and desserts. Juansetter (Escaping in the City: A Taste of Real Italy) said: "Every other item has truffles/truffle oil in it, and every third has prosciutto or Parmigiano Reggiano. And none of it is the heavy saucy, fried stuff that you find in most New York Italian restaurants; rather, this green cafe goes for the fresh, healthy, Mediterranean feel that we love about Italy." "That's probably because the owners - and, indeed, the guy behind the counter - are actually from Italy. Ciao!" Piccolo offers daily and one-off special deals.

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
