We visited after reading the reviews on TP, I have to say the welcome, food and service was excellent. We met the owner who really adds a personal touch to ensure everyone enjoys their food by calling to the tables to advise what food is good (although what we had was fab) but takes the time to speak with his... My husband and I were looking for Indian food in a neighborhood that we had yet to explore and came across The Masalawala. The restaurant is intimate and has an elegant but comfortable neighborhood feel. When we arrived, it was full, but after a short wait (which was no problem for us) in a heated front sitting area, we got... More

I can totally recommend this restaurant. Great service, very friendly and especially the restaurant chef was so warm-hearted! Also the food was so delicious - the price, especially for NYC, was absolutely ok and justified. I would eat there again!

I travel around the world and this restaurant ranks up there with the best Indian food I have ever had. Six of us shared many dishes and all were tasty and perfectly prepared. I will definitely come back.

A friend and I happened into The Wasala Wala while wandering on the Lower East Side looking for a place to have dinner. We are both world travelers and great fans of Indian food who have dined in Indian restaurants on many continents, and we agreed that the food at The Wasala Wala was the best we have ever eaten... The restaurant has a cosy atmosphere paired with very attentive but not intrusive service. The menu features a wide range of typical and speciality dishes from the Indian kitchen including some fantastic curries. We caught the owner's, Masala Wala, interest when ordering hot food who dropped by after we already filed our order. He advised that there is a spicier... More

As our hotel was just around the corner, we stopped off here for dinner after theater. It was close to 11pm so fairly quiet. The food was good and the quantities generous. The price was reasonable for the location. Service was good, but it was quite at the time.

Staying in Lower East Side

Neighbourhood Profile
Lower East Side
Straddling the bridge between New York’s thriving immigrant past and its modern transformation into a beacon of global art and culture, the Lower East Side is one of the most dynamic neighbourhoods in the city. The blocks of tenements that represented the promise and blight of the Lower East Side immigrant experience now command top dollar for new residents. Right next to old-world delis, 24-hour bodegas, and the garment shops of Orchard Street, you’ll find hip clubs, fashionable bistros, and luxury hotels beckoning at all hours of the evening. If you love nightlife and live music, it’s hard to beat the scene here.
