For an expat the search for a real full English can be frustrating, especially in America. The Yanks do some wonderful food, but they really, really do not understand breakfast. The American version of bacon is an abomination... Well, in New York at least, there is an oasis of civilisation and it's name is Tea & Sympathy. It's very small,... More

Terrible, beyond rude, have never forgotten how my poorly they treated my mother here on a special family occasion. And the poor quality doesn't justify the attitude. might I recommend the adorable Podunk Tea room or Alice's Tea Cup if you're in search of a proper cuppa in the city, and being treated like a human being as well -... Great small intimate place for English style tea break. Apple crumble was excellent. I ate two. Located close to transportation lines and other attraction.

From the moment you walk in you are struck by the familial feel and unparalleled chemistry between the two waitresses. It certainly made me question whether I really needed to eat anywhere else in New York during my stay. If you're a Brit, you'll be delighted to see the broad range of teas on offer and the breakfast is decidedly... More

We went to Tea And Sympathy for lunch today and had a great meal. The atmosphere in the restaurant is a little cosy but fun. We both had the Welsh Rarebit with the Black Currant Ice Tea, my husband had the Sticky Banana Cake and I had the Sticky Toffee Pudding and both of us had our desserts with custard.... More

I visited with family and friends twice in May for brunch and had a great meal on both occasions. The Guinness and steak pie was awesome and ,as an aficionado of all pastry dishes, I consider this as good as it gets. It is a tiny place but this adds greatly to the atmosphere especially when you are within a... More

My Friend and I made a point of visiting when in NYC Greenwich Village area on our last trip to NYC. Very busy place and not very big. You have to stay outside until your table is ready so take note for weather sake since there isn't any room to wait inside. It had alot of charm in the post... More

Tea & Sympathy makes me embarrassed to be English in New York. From the pissy little list of 'rules' for customers printed on the menu (we can move you if we want, TIP US, etc) to the frankly stupid 'you can't come in till all your party has arrived' dictat - oh, fine, so we won't order the additional food/drink... Staying in West Village

Neighbourhood Profile
West Village
Stretching from Sixth Avenue to the Hudson River, the West Village is one of the city’s most coveted addresses. Full of trendy shops, historic taverns, and cozy restaurants set amid 19th century architecture, this neighbourhood has a unique old-world feel. You won’t find a more picturesque location in Manhattan. Without the traditional city grid layout, it’s easy to get lost here, but that’s part of the fun as you stroll down elegant narrow streets with beautiful brownstones. When you need a break, you can always stop in at one of the many quaint eateries or cafes to soak in the atmosphere, or head to the western edge of the neighborhood to enjoy magnificent waterfront views while taking a leisurely walk in Hudson River Park.
