We went to Tony's after a long day shopping obviously we were starving. The service was amazing so is the food. The portions were very big half portions were enough, the food tasted really good and the atmosphere was excellent. You can go alone or with the family in both cases it's a good place to be.

Wait staff amazing, never had to think about asking for more water because the glass was always full. Attentive, polite, and knowledgeable. Large family style dishes that were very good! We got the fra diavlo sauce which was spicy goodness. Prices were very fair and will not hesitate to go back or recommend to friends.

A group of 8 of us recently dined here for a family birthday. It is family style and the full size portions serve 3-4 people. We ordered the Calamari, Caesar salad, Chicken Piccata, Chicken Francese, Veal Saltimbocca, and Penne Alla Vodka. Everything was absolutely delicious except the piccata. I actually thought it was terrible. I would definitely return but would... More

We ate at Tony's on a Saturday before heading to a Broadway show. We really like the family style portions - we had a full appetizer, full order of salad, pasta, and chicken Parmesan. The size we had serves 2-3 and we split all of the food among 4 people. Along with 3 glasses of wine we paid just over... More

The restaurant is good for big groups on a budget. The Italian dishes are seasoned to American taste but are well prepared. It is a good choice people who might be shopping in Bloomingdales who are on a budget and do not feel dressed up enough for dinner. It is casual dining definitely. They have a few good dishes like... Ate her with a party of 11 after the NYC Marathon. Had a fabulous server (Joe) who took great care of us. Enjoyed both individual dishes and family style meals. No one will walk away hungry. Make reservations.

Restaurant was not crowded since we arrived early around 5PM. We had reservations and were seated right away. Pay for parking available in rear of restaurant although not related restaurant. Food was good not great. We started with appetizers and the prosciutto with burratta was excellent. Had a glass of Merlot house wine okay. Next course ordered the eggplant parmisian... More

We were taken to this great restaurant by friends of ours who live in New York. They come here all the time because the food is great, the atmosphere is lively, service is impeccable and prices surprisingly reasonable. It's a real no-brainer. In this City of a million restaurants, make sure you find time for this one.

Great Italian restaurant close to my hotel. They have excellent food, a very friendly and attentive wait staff, and are very accomodating to people with food allergies! They serve platters to the table "family style", but to accoomodate my allergies, the waitress brought a series of completely separate, allergy free, platters of everything on the table. She was awesome!

Thank you for a review that reflects your honest feelings.

I can certainly appreciate that your preference was for relaxed dining where you could "visit" with your family. There are many restaurants, particularly in small communities, where that is the norm. You settle in to a table and pretty much can spend the entire evening there.

When I'm at home in Florida I generally feel the same way that you do. But, I always make that judgement keeping other parties in mind and being considerate of their needs as well as my own.

In the case of a high volume, busy New York restaurant, it's important...at least in my mind and my behavior...to consider these factors:

1) Restaurants doing the volume of Tony di Napoli normally have a lot of other customers waiting for tables. Tony's takes reservations as a courtesy to their regular patrons. Their scheduling is dependent on having an open table when the person or groups of people having the reservation arrive. That depends on an estimate of the approximate time each table will "turn over." When a group "idles" excessively at a table, which was your preference, they interfere with the "right" of other patrons to have the table when promised.

2) The business model of big city restaurants, even high-quality ones like Tony's, depends upon sales volume. Reaching the necessary sales points depend upon the restaurants being able to turn over tables a given number of times per night. In order to provide the relatively low prices (and good value) that Tony's gives to people like you and me they must have at least two to three groups sitting at a table within the relatively short period of the dinner hour(s) each night. If they don't have the turn-over they will be losing money at the price per meal that you paid.

3) One of the waiter's jobs is to assure turn-over of tables and smooth production flow for the kitchen. His income, primarily based upon tips, is also dependent on the total dollars spent over the course of the evening by each of "his" tables. So, if he has one table...yours...that is missing a single turn-over with a check of between $100 - $150 for the average group you are effectively costing him $20 - $30 personally for your "visit."

This doesn't mean that you are wrong in wanting to obtain the "rest" value out of "restaurant." It just means that your expectations and behavior need to be adjusted to the reality of the particular restaurant you're dining in.

In smaller towns or at your local Starbucks or coffee shop there's no problem with idling. For hotel restaurants or gourmet establishments, where the price is many times Tony's, it's OK, too.. But, I would suggest that you try to see the "crunch" and economics from the restaurant's and other patrons' point of view.

Choosing the right venue or restaurant will avoid a stressful situation for you, the restaurant and the wait staff.
