There are certain gems in NY the go over looked. "Vagabondos" as I knew it growing up is one of them. A place so off the charts and map in an upper east side neighborhood in the basement of a town house. I have been eating there since the age of 13 (I'm not disclosing my age but more that... More

I have been to this restaurant periodically over the past 50 years, and I am sad that it is now "closed for an extended period". This was a classic New York dining experience, not necessarily for the food (which was reliable but not superb) but for the old-timers, the lifer bartenders and staff, and the Bocci court in the back.... We went here for brunch... not a good idea. My sandwich was terrible, and my wife's omelette was subpar. I'm not sure if the dinner menu is better.. but not a good brunch.

My husband and l had our first date here more than 30 years ago and when l lived in the city l'd try to get all my dates to come here. There is a bocce ball court that you could sit next to and watch people play or play yourself which was fun. But when l went last summer, it... More

Came here because of Emeril Lagasse calling Il Vagabondo's 'Veal Parmesan' as "the best thing I ever ate" on food network. The waiter was sweaty and unfriendly, our food took over half an hour to arrive, and was a total disappointment once we got it. Now I as a German might not be able to understand the intricacies of American... More

My wife and I walked to the restaurant late afternoon on Dec 5. Place was dark, obviously a vacant space, and a sign on the door: CLOSED! Web site still active and TA listing still saying OPEN. Went to Patsy's on 60th street as an alternate and had a very good meal.

This little hidden storefront restaurant has been in this location for 30 years that I have been eating they are. Do not be fooled by its storefront. Inside are 4 separate dining rooms. as you walk in is the bar, you will be greeted by one of the owners, Charlie, Jasper the bartender or Ralph, the entire staff is simply... More

This place has been around forever - at least 35 years with it novel bocce court which certainly attracts many diners and tourists. It's a fun experience but the restaurant itself is tired and ordinary and the menu hasn't changed in decades. Everything is standard and just ok. People don't come for the food but they do come for a... More

The feel and food of this place demonstrate the pride its owners have in it. We all had (coincidentally) veal dishes which were all excellent, with my veal vagabondo being declared the winner. Slow-ish but not ridiculous service. Decent wine selection. And, if you are so inclined, bocce in the back! Note that the restaurant will be closed for renovation... More

Staying in Upper East Side

Neighbourhood Profile
Upper East Side
Combining quiet residential neighbourhoods that have easy access to Central Park with world-famous cultural institutions, the Upper East Side is one of the most livable places in the city. Along beautiful Fifth Avenue, you’ll find Museum Mile, which houses many of the nation's most famous attractions in a single stretch, like The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Walk a few blocks into the neighbourhood, and you’ll come to Park Avenue, the poshest address in the city, lined with grand apartment buildings as far as the eye can see. Even if you can’t afford the luxury goods along Madison Avenue, it’s still a great spot to window shop an afternoon away.
