The decor was similar to restaurants in Japan. The seafood salad was excellent, and not that artificially colored bright green junk that is often served in Japanese restaurants here in the US. The tatsuta age (fried chicken) was great. I didn't have the noodles, but hope to go back and try on my next visit. My dining companions had udon... More

Went to grab an early dinner with a friend on a cold day. The early dinner set menu is a great deal! You get tempura, noodles (soba or udon),veggies, and dessert. The strawberry on the ice cream is a really sweet touch. Quick service. Delicious. Hearty. Def will go back

This place is the real deal. Freshly made soba. It tastes just like it in Japan. Not very spacious and not airy. The entrance is shabby. Sitting close to others. However, the aesthetics and ambience is very comforting. The selection of the menu items (no pad-thai nor general tso chicken), serve speed, taste of soba, the size of wasabi, texture... More

There are many Japanese restaurants on East 9th Street. After looking at several menus this was an excellent choice. It's small but the furnishings give the feeling of being in a Japanese setting. The service was very good. The food was wonderful. The serving portions were generous and I always enjoy a good box meal. The selections in the box... More

This place is the closest to perfection as any Japanese eatery you will find. It is NOT particularly cheap, but it is affordable and the food is ridiculously delicious. The fresh in house made noodles, hot and cold, are amazing. The lunch box is $21.00 and will fill you up completely. In one box you can find Tempura, rice, vegetables,... More

I went to Soba Ya last night with my wife and had the soba noodles with shiitake mushrooms and a sake ! The noodles and the mushrooms were excellent, but the medium sized portion was so small that I left the restaurant starving and when I looked at the bill I was appalled! If you want to spend money and... More

Stopped in here after a show at the Public Theater. The interior was straight outta Kyoto, the soba noodles fresh made on a windowed display table near the front. I had a salmon & avocado rice bowl; my mates hot soba bowls. Every bite was savory and delicious. Finished with a green tea broulee - maybe not traditional, but delicious... More

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
