I agree with other reviewers... service is mechanical and stiff - even a bit theatrically weird. The decor, although tasteful and interesting, adds to the austere atmosphere. I really wanted to love this restaurant because of its 2 Michelin stars. During the course of the tasting menu, I occasionally did. Most dishes were lost on me though. Overall, it was... More

With mildly Scandinavian touches this restaurant continues to serve interesting, fresh, and deliscious food. Good wine list, excellent, maybe slightly mechanical, service, and good location makes it a good choice for many different occasions from romantic dinners to business meals. Slightly surprisingly, given the level of excellence, you have the table only for a few hours. However, all in all... More

We visited for lunch for my wife's birthday while on a city break in December. We've previously eaten at Daniel (several times), Jean Georges, Le Bernardin, Marea and in numerous 2/3 star restaurants elsewhere. We went for the prix fixe menu and it was extremely underwhelming. The decor is functional, the service was good (although the components of the herring... More

Clean and crisp decor. Over the top service at every single touch point. The tasting menu is mind blowing. Like nothing else I've had. Very pricey but worth the splurge.

Amazingly good in all features -- food, service and ambience. Stylishly simple in design, but excellent choices in food. For lunch, I had the gravlax and the isterband (sausage plus seasoned mashed potatoes) Reasonable wine choices. Exceptional service. All in all, a pleasant experience.

We absolutely loved this place. The food was excellent and they kept bringing us little dishes in between the courses. Just stunning! Service was great too, the staff was so attentive and answered all our questions. Would definitely recommend for a fine dining experience.

We did the Prix Fixe menu and I wish we'd done the tasting menu. The entrees on the prix fixe were good but not great. They gave us a few little in-between tastings which were VERY good. I'd give it 3 stars for the prix fixe menu, but 5 stars for what I think the tasting menu would be like,... More

This was a return visit to Aquavit during a trip to NYC. We weren't disappointed - the service was good as was the food. The only slightly disappointing element was the dessert which was a bit uninspiring. There's a choice of menu and we didn't go for the long tasting menu although plenty around us were doing this. Presentation was... More

We have been at Aquavit before. Nice place, pleasant room and interiour. The food is also very good. The only problem, it is too stiff. First I asked for the tasting menu, but we both had to have it. Then I asked for Løjrom as an extra starter (I knew they had it in the bar). We got that, but... More

I ate here with a group of colleagues as part of a business trip. I rocked up just in time to have starters, a very simple and tasteless salad followed by overcooked fillet of beef smothered in a very bland sauce, completed by a well presented and tasty dessert. It was only two days later when a friend told me... More

Description
Restaurant Aquavit opened to immediate success in midtown Manhattan in November 1987. More than two decades later, Aquavit continues to be one of New York's most popular and highly esteemed dining destinations. A pioneer on the American dining scene, Aquavit remains the only world-class modern Scandinavian restaurant in the country, and was also the first restaurant in New York to house two concepts under one roof: a casual bistro serving hearty, simple fare and a formal dining room offering refined, modern Scandinavian cuisine. Owner Håkan Swahn has always been involved with every aspect of the business, and his passion and vision are what steer the restaurant. Executive Chef Marcus Jernmark is in the kitchen every day, where his talent and his commitment to quality and authenticity are apparent in every ingredient he purchases and every dish he prepares. Swahn and Jernmark collaborate closely on Aquavit's menus, and together they provide leadership and inspiration to the team at Aquavit.

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
