Veselka's brings Ukrainian deliciousness to the East Village 24 hours a day. In the mood for potato pancakes, we took a friend's recommendation and headed to this long-time diner. The pancakes were wonderful as well as the Pierogies. Great comfort food on a cold winter's day. The cafe was packed, a testament to its food.

For me it was the best Polish/Ukrainian food I'd had outside Europe. I was a little tipsy so that may have contributed to that. The place was packed though so I'm obviously not the only one with that opinion. My dinner date didn't rate it so highly, but they were from New Zealand, so apart from lamb and cheese rolls... More

Veselka, an icon on Manhattan's Lower East Side has been around for 60+ years and it's no wonder - the food and atmosphere is amazing! Open 24 hours to please everyone, this eatery will not disappoint you. Whether you're in the mood for traditional Ukrainian fare, like pierogies, borscht, stuffed cabbage or compote or simply want a good sandwich, burger... More

We love dumplings from probably every country that's been replicated in the US. Pierogies are one of our favorites. And these Ukranian handmade varenyky stand out as the best. Highly recommend arugula & goat cheese. Very good pricing as well.

Was in the mood for some Eastern European cuisine while walking around Manhattan so looked online and found this restaurant. I sat in and got served by a lovely lady. She recommended the deluxe meat platter: Meat Stuffed Cabbage, Kielbasa and 3 Pierogi (Mushroom, potato and meat) I also had two local beers. I didn't want to leave the food... More

After taking my daughter to the Village Vanguard, we uber'd it over to Vesselka for a really late night meal. I think she'd say this was her most NYC evening...hearing jazz and going to this amazing Ukranian cafe in the middle of the night. The Stuffed Cabbage...I want to cry when I think about it because I don't get anything... More

Finally took my son, who lives in New York City to this place. He loved it so much, that he got a large order of pirogi to go. We all got different type of the pirogis and all were great. The borscht was the best ever. Up until now, I had just tried the cold borscht in the summer. The... More

My boyfriend and I got takeout pierogi as we were walking past here and absolutely loved them. I am from Pittsburgh and got really turned on to pierogi from early in my life due to the large Polish population there. I have tried many different pierogi, many from Polish immigrants. Veselka's pierogi add a new twist to pierogi with lots... More

Aside from the quick service and decor it's not what you'd expect from a diner! The food was fantastic, exactly like a home cooked Ukrainian/Russian meal. The short rib beef Perogi are a must, and the beef stroganoff was delicious and also highly recommended. We had the seasonal Borsch soup with mushroom dumplings which was a bit too strong, might've... More

Finding ourselves nearby at dinner time I remembered this restaurant and when we arrived at 7 pm we found quite a number of other locals wanting the same bargain filling food. I had a vegetariab platter that consisted of a variety of meatless pirogis (Ukrainian wanton or kreplach) and vegetarian stuffed cabbage. My wife had the meat version. Two people... More

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
