Positives first. The live piano/clarinet music was nice. The waiter made excellent recommendations for wine pairing. The rack of lamb was pretty good. The white choc/choc mousse was great. Concerns: The restaurant's limited size a table 6 inches from us on both sides. Not romantic. My wife threw up less than 5 minutes after eating the lobster bisque and said... More

We have been to Chez Josephine twice, the first time after going to see An American in Paris. The bar is small but the drinks are well made. The food is very good and reasonably priced and the atmosphere is French bistro. Get the book about Josephine which they sell at the bar, what a fascinating life she led.

We made a 5 o'clock reservation on a Saturday night, asked for a quiet table in back. For about 10 minutes there were only a few other people in the restaurant, by 5:30 it was almost completely full. A very knowledgeable waiter steered me toward the French onion soup, which was superb. The fried oyster appetizer was enough for a... More

This was our first time here and we'll be back for sure. The food was delicious and larger than most french influenced restaurants....you'll definitely leave full and happy. We loved listening to the live piano player during dinner who played the classics. We'll be back!

I took my family here for dinner after a show at the Javitz Center and was fairly satisfied with our meal. It's a very small place with crammed tables and loud talking so no romantic conversations here. There is also a person playing a piano in the back of the restaurant but if you're sitting in the front like we... More

Had a prix fixe restaurant week dinner before a Broadway show. The waiter asked what time our show was so that we had plenty of time to enjoy our meal. The menu was quite nice. The room is charming with a piano player playing jazz tunes. I had the mushroom ravioli appetizer which was delicious and the roast organic chicken... More

Josephine Baker would be pleased to see her tribute! Wonderful and intimate with tin ceiling and an amazing piano player in the background adding to the ambiance. Don't miss this if you're in the area. The service was impeccable. Food had a very nice presentation. We were fortunate to hit restaurant week with a fixed price for three courses for... More

Chez Josephine exceeded our expectations for a NYC dinner. We really enjoyed the vibe - true to a Parisian bistro in decor & ambience - right down to the jazz piano entertainment in the background. Friendly staff and attentive service. Definitely "cozy". Our table in the back allowed conversation, perhaps a bit more so than tables in the front/near the... More

Atmospheric French restaurant which pays homage to Josephine Baker. We had a quick meal before going to the theatre. The service was excellent and the food delicious. I would like to return for a less rushed meal on another occasion

Spent a lovely evening and had a great meal. Friendly staff and good service. We don't mind waiting for our meal as we are assured that it is cooked well. A great atmosphere and ambience. Well worth a visit.

Description
The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
