I stopped in last night, before 6pm. I asked for a table for two. There may have been 10 customers sitting, tops. The manager said she couldn't accommodate me although the restaurant could easily sit another 30-40 ppl, not including outside seating. I told her that I've been coming here for over 12 years. That meant nothing to her. Yesterday... More

Casual, comfy indoor or outdoor seating. Service was good. Guacamole & chips were nice, but probably not homemade. Brussels sprout warm salad was okay, as was the burger. Roasted chicken was average. Had leftovers but didn't take home. Polled the family and two said 3.5 and one said 4 stars. Left the rating at 4 though. One thing to fix,... More

This was my first experience with a delicious Brazilian meal! The Feijoada -- pork and black bean stew -- was delicious! Be sure to put the spice topping on. We started with Mexilhoes, roasted mussels, and they were beautifully seasoned. A side of shaved brussel sprouts was a great addition. We sat outside, and it was such a pleasant way... More

Aside from an inexplicable five-minute gap between the arrival of my wife's caparinha and mine this was a satisfying meal. The drinks were sufficiently potent so I did not have to use the emergency rum supply in my pocket. The trio of ceviche and the special tuna ceviche were enjoyable. Good calamari and good fish and shrimp stews, using coconut... More

Went there for dinner on a Thursday night. Outdoor seating is quite nice. Definitely try their Caipirinhas, they were delicious (and strong). I went with their special that day. Crab meat cooked with coconut milk in a banana leaf. I have to say I was quite disappointed with the flavor and rawness of the food. The plantain chips that came... More

Speaking Of individuality of servers, you have to come eat/drink at Esperanto. I had their signature "Jugo" in beet juice with cucumber vodka, very refreshing. Blue crab with plantain, grilled jumbo shrimps with rice and salsa, both were very savoy and satisfying. After, I went for my favors dessert- Liquid Dessert, their Caipirinha with their house infused hibiscus rum, pretty... More

I saw that this place was highly rated for brunch so I went there with a friend. It is a very cool place on a corner across from the community garden. It was a beautiful summer day so they had everything open. We chose a table inside but it felt almost like we were outside. Perfect, even if the table... More

I think it was our first diner in NYC and it was great. It was a super hot summer day and at night the restaurant has all its windows opened, the music was loud and the pastel tones of the wall paint made us feel more in a restaurant in Cuba or Rio de Janeiro :) We had nice cocktails... More

Came here with two friends for drinks and dinner/snacks. Service was swift and very friendly. One order was misunderstood and promptly replaced free of charge and within an acceptable time-frame. Nice selection of Brazilian and other food, good selection of beers, cocktails were modified to taste. There are vegetarian and vegan options. Nice experience.

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
