Relaxed restaurant with good eating and wining. Loved the fairly large bar and not to mention the style of it all. Staff were a lot better than average

We went to Gemma's the other day with friends, after a show. The restaurant is very cool - beautiful oak bar, high ceilings etc. The food was pretty good but, the choices are limited. My friend wanted chicken parm - not on the menu and they wouldnt make it. The wait staff was good at the beginning but no where... More

The bar is great with very friendly service. The service in general is good but it is an extremely noisy place with the worse pasta dishes I had in NYC. I had the pappardelle with ragout sauce which was really tasteless and full of salt and I tasted the orrechiete with brocoli rabe of a friend which was really inedible... More

This is a nice restaurant. The guy at the bar very cool and helpful. The food is not so great. We've ordered pizzas. And they are pretty average, we expected something more espectacular for the price. The decoration is great

I was told by the staff that they have a new chef. I have eaten here a few times but this time was fantastic. My girlfriend and I got the specials and were very impressed. We visit NYC a few times a year and normally stay at the hotel attached to the restaurant. It has always been good but this... More

Had lunch here and the restaurant was pretty empty. I need to start by saying the staff barely speaks English so get ready. They brought us a bread bowl which was delicious, after about 5 minutes a busser comes by to ask if he can remove the bread..it was so odd...we were like no, we are enjoying it. No one... More

Walked in on a semi quiet Wednesday with a girlfriend and tried to sit in the lobby bar for a drink. The Asian guy in a suit who stops you immediately before setting foot in the common space asked if we were hotel guests and wouldn't let us sit down for a cocktail. It was "reserved"-however, half empty. There's always... More

We went to have dinner with friends last Saturday night. The place is gorgeous, candle lit, nice people having good time. The guy from the Bar (we had to wait 10 minutes for our table) was super rude with us, he made fun because some of us didn't want to BUY a drink, which, by the way were not tempting.... More

Enjoyed dinner here - they were fully booked but squeezed us in near the bar. Dinner was tasty, though my friends pasta was a little disappointing and uninteresting. Service was friendly - a bit slow and hard to get attention at times.

With a full bar and late hour service ,you wouldn't expect the kind of excellent Italian food and wine (the Barrola always a good choice,) in a packed restaurant on a Tuesday night at 11! This is totally old school so we had meatballs and spaghetti and loved the warm bread to sop up the last of the sauce!

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
