interesting mexican food; "flannel" service; moderate prices; good for families; kitschy decor. good for lunch or lighthearted dinner.

This is a very pleasant Mexican with really lovely decor. I would not say that the food set me on fire but it was tasty. The margaritas on the other hand were extremely good as was the 'old fashioned' that I had the pleasure to have in the Ranstead Room. There is more to this little restaurant than meets the... More

Being on Chestnut St. I have drove past this place many times and looking at it form the outside I would have never thought to go in. That changed last week when my daughter invited my girlfriend and I to join her for dinner. Once inside you see that the decor is meant to be somewhat dated looking and that... More

I am from Mexico, and being in Philadelphia for a couple of months and was longing for some Mexican food. After a few questions, I finally ended in El Rey. My friend asked for the Chiles en Nogada, and I asked for some Enchiladas (chicken). Also we asked for some Campechana. The Chile en nogada was good, but the Nogada... More

The tacos in this restaurant are amazing! As are the happy hour prices! The wait staff are very helpful in describing the food and making suggestions. Don't limit yourself to the tacos--the rest of the menu is also delicious. Haven't tried the margaritas, but they were squeezing the limes for a huge batch of them while we were there. The... More

After a week in Philly I was craving my Mexican food fix. I heard there was a great Mexican restaurant around our hotel somewhere - and we hiked around until we saw it and figured that was the one. What a great little place - full of smiling waitstaff having a good time, and wonderful Mexican food I would never... More

Arrived in Philadelphia and looking for restaurant to meet the needs of grown-ups and five year old close to our apartment. Black refried beans and rice passed the five year old's connoisseur test. Tasty homemade chips and pico de gallo. Chile releno was tasty, authentically deep fried. I was surprised to see many authentic Mexican dishes on their menu. Try... More

OK, only a fool goes to Philly looking for good Mexican food, I suppose. But we read a couple of reviews and decided to try their brunch. El Rey is located in an old diner with remnants of earlier lives (e.g., automobile logos on the booth walls and eclectic touches of mid-century modern lamps alongside a claque of old, torn... More
