Just stumbled onto this place quite by accident in the Carrollton river bend area. Food was excellent. Chicken tamale was cooked perfectly and spiced just right. Also tried the shrimp tacos which were great. Everything was fresh. If you haven't tried authentic Latin food, you have to give this place a try.

I honestly have no idea how I took me two years to find this gem. Everything from their breakfast burritos to shrimp tacos are AMAZING...don't even get me started on their pupusas. All the food here tastes so authentic and healthy. It's rare to find a place like this that can get you full but still feel great afterwards. Plus,... More

The food in this cozy restaurant is delicious! So are the non alcoholic Salvadoran beverages. We often eat there because it is our favorite Latino restaurant in New Orleans. Additionally Manny often has specials and new menu items so there is always something new to try.

Owner Manny makes you feel like family when visiting this small Latin American restaurant in the River Bend area. Experience the tastes of Latin America in this colorful cafe just off of Carrollton Avenue by St. Charles Avenue. Also featured are gourmet pastries that are out of this world. Be ready for an unique dining experience!

I've been coming to La Macarena for the last five years. It's always fun and casual with friendly service. Usually get the papusas or Central American Breakfast. Enjoyed the breakfast burrito (nola).

My wife and I happened upon La Macarena on our way to another eatery. The colorful facade and friendly greeting drew us in. We love Latin/Caribbean food. Everything was excellent. We had fired plantains, chicken flautas, shrimp tacos, and shrimp & grits. Manny was friendly, funny and welcoming. We will definitely come back again.

The best dinning choice I made in NOLA. The spicy shrimp tacos were recommended and were the best thing I ate during my visit. The pupusas were also amazing. Along with amazing food came emmaculate cleanliness and service. I will definitely return.

Founds this spot on a gluten free app, and decided to give it a try. So happy we did! Manny the proprietor greeted us with a big smile and took care of us all evening. We had the Vegetarian plate, which included veggie and corn tamale. Also some fried plantains and one traditional pupusa platter. Everything was so good! It... More

Staying in Uptown / Carrollton

Neighbourhood Profile
Uptown / Carrollton
Very much their own self sufficient unit within the greater metro area, Uptown and Carrollton tone down the urban edge with a friendly attitude and collegiate feel. Home to Tulane and Loyola Universities, all the students living in the area ensure that Uptown and Carrollton stay youthful, cosmopolitan and vibrantly fun. Two of the liveliest thoroughfares for nightlife and socializing (and yes of course more of the city’s outstandingly good food and live music) are Oak Street and Maple Street. For a truly wild time, the expansive acreage of Audubon Park, with its zoo, golf course, and actual patches of swampy wetlands, means peace and quiet are never too far away.
