Not everyday does one get to try kava. I've known about kava from a daughter who was invited into a Fijiian village & was served kava. This is the first place I've run into it myself. So I actually participated in the kava ceremony with a young lady guiding me through the procedure. The drink itself was not as bad... More

What a place to unwind! Enjoyed a bowl of Kava (not the taste) but VERY relaxing drink and the home cooked REAL Hawaiian food was SO delicious! Very fresh and made with love!

The taste is definitely not for everyone, but it's worth trying a couple. The Haupia and sweet potato pie was a wonderful dessert. Pulled pork was salty and tasty. Locals were relaxed and friendly. Saw several tourists come and go. It's worth sharing a bench and staying for a bit. I feel relaxed after three shells of kava.

His is a great place to sit back and relax, especially if they have live music; they also serve good food.

Small hole in the wall for the artsy local style crowd and for a taste of "fresh" kava if that's your thing. Also serve food which was quick and fresh and simple. Another spot to support locally instead of the luau down the street.

Very chill atmosphere. The kava was served out of a large bowl, into small cups made out of coconuts. The person serving the kava did not wear gloves while serving the drink and the cups looked questionable. The kava was an accepted taste and not an acquired one (Staff even told us that). It soon made your mouth and tongue... More

Kava, as defined by Google: 1. a narcotic sedative drink made in Polynesia from the crushed roots of a plant of the pepper family. 2. the Polynesian shrub from which the kava root is obtained. $5 Kava drink: it doesn't taste good, but I wanted to find out what the deal was. My lips, mouth, and tongue went a bit... More

If you want a totally unique experience while on Big Island, you must visit Kanaka Kava. Ask for Johanna, Zach or Sage. Tell them that you want a shell...prepare to stay for 3....at least. Then relax and watch the waves roll in. For best results have an empty stomach. Be prepared to rub shoulders with locals and tourists alike...more than... More

When I went on my first trip out of the country, I was sixteen and asked for my last meal in Hawaii to be laulau. Somehow we stumbled across this gem. That was almost a decade ago now, but I have never forgotten their pie. Recently we had visitors from WA, I was craving dessert so I got a whole... More
