Kudos to the website designer and photographer - makes the place look full of heart and special. The reality though is sadly a bit of a letdown. Warm greeting, conversation is restrained but adequate. Very nice glass of wine - nice setting, fireplace etc. At...this point one expects rolls or whatever swiss begin a meal with. Nothing. No biggie but strange. We mentioned the entrees we were planning on to help decide on a wine and somehow this led her placing the order with the kitchen skipping any offer of appetizers, not sure what happened there. No biggie, we joke that we'll make it up with dessert. The food arrives and it's difficult to explain the feeling because our expectations are high and we want so much to be impressed - My wife had the veal strips in mushroom sauce, tasty but ridiculously tiny amount of veal - as in kids menu portion. I actually joked with her suggesting she order another dish. As for my entree, I have had many Cordon Bleu in my years and I have to say this was the most completely disappointing I've ever had - maybe it's the swiss way I don't know, but there's nothing of the highest class about this flat boring rewarmed version. For dessert, my wife had the Black Forest; again, fine but not even slightly decadent, while I had the Mango Berry cheesecake - tasty, but again, tiny slices blandly plopped diner style on little wooden saucers without any love whatsoever. To wrap this up: the website, and reading that the manager has worked in St Moritz etc., creates an expectation that she understands experience and polish. This restaurant is lacking in both. We were back in the car in under an hour. I would have gladly spent double or more to have the experience match the expectation. Friends asked how the place was and I replied – it's not high end as we had thought, it's not a diner, it's not a pub or tavern, I guess kind of a weird mix of all three leaning more one way or the other depending on what you order, I don't think they know what they want to be. If you go in thinking that, you'll be fine. I hope this helpful.More

My son and I visit Canthooks every October in association with our annual fishing trip to the area. We have never had anything but a great visit: food, service, cocktails, and a nice atmosphere. The owner has been quite gracious and welcoming every time.

My family and I are from France, and wanted to try some of the Swiss menu. Unfortunately, it was pathetic and the service was very tense. We ordered chicken which was so dry with what seemed like Luke warm broth…didn’t think it was that complex...of a dish but when we tried to say something we were told that the young chef knows best? Very disheartening. The salads were very sparse, with little cheese and flavour…the gnocchi was swimming in watered down creme sauce with small portions. The bread was cold and very hard. We do understand we have off days but we were so rudely treated at this Swiss restaurant by the female manager and upper management…no customer service skills and unprofessional young girl cook smoking by side door and swearing …so disappointed. Especially as we have young children.More

Great food. Menu is Swiss based. Lots of options. Ok wine list. Yummy desert. Black Forest cake was awesome! I also really enjoyed the mushroom gnocchi. Best part was that it was part of the hotel and a short walk from our room. Only downside...is that it’s not open 7 days a week. Make sure you check their opening hours and plan ahead.More

We visited Canthooks during our short ski-vacation. Great wine menu, fantastic appetizers, main courses and dessert. One minor drawback, the restaurant does not really have an European or Swiss atmosphere. However, the service from Iris, the owner, was very attentive and I loved the very...tasty Mushroom Gnocchi.More

Upon arrival- we asked the front desk staff and we were pointed to waiting the wait area. We were not attended to at the waiting area which was indicated 'to wait to be seated'. We made eye contact with 2 of the waitresses and they...served people prior to us. When we saw that people were seated prior to us - we went to the waitress and she was quite rude about it. Thankfully the burgers were great. Waitress (short dark hair) never asked how the food was till after we were almost done eating. It wasn't busy at all. It was just bad service.More

On a weekday trip from Ottawa to see Fall colours, we chose this restaurant for an early supper. The service and food were excellent. All Safety precautions are in place. Operating hours are shorter: opens at 3 pm. right now. Quite a lot of choice...on the menu, considering the Covid 19 situation. The rouladen entree was amazing. With spaetlze and red cabbage: simple and beautifully cooked. Good choice of wines and local beer. Thanks, Iris!More

The breakfast included with the hotel stay is nice -- instant oatmeal, pastries, yogourt, coffee, juice. New Year's Eve dinner was a disappointment. My fish was overcooked and the dish was quite small. All of our meals ended up overcooked actually, including steak and hamburgers....I did not find there was value for what we spent. Staff are quite friendly.More

After spending the weekend at the resort, my better half and I would rank the restaurant as "average." The decor and ambiance is great but the food and service is average. No knowledge of the ingredients or flavours of the dishes, one of the servers...(female, short dark hair) was very abrupt with service. My better half's steak with Jager sauce was tasty but my trout was overcooked. The vegetables provided with it consisted of two brussel sprouts, three green beans and three small carrots. Lots of spaetzle with butter though to try and fill up the diner. The breakfasts that are complimentary are quite boring. Cold boiled eggs, plain breads/bagels, carrot muffins, croissants and coffee that weren't refilled as needed...etc. If they want to make themselves a true resort, improvements are needed with service and products, especially given the price per dinner menu item they are charging. More care is needed.More
