eating area closed. some seats in bar so high the table rests on your legs. Lasagne brought in burnt and shrivelled, only offered replacement when complained. Run out of more lasagne. No gas for the pumps so no lager etc. probably the worst experience we've ever had.

Went for Sunday lunch to celebrate my Aunt's birthday. Lovely venue , warm welcome and good service but we all chose the roast beef (topside) and myAunt's was rare and very difficult to cut., mine was only good in parts and had no flavour. Asked for replacement meat which came dry and tough - looked like it had just been... More

We stayed in Shere for a couple of days and had dinner here on both evenings. The food was very good and reasonably priced. Nice atmosphere with open fires. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Would most definitely go back when in the area again.

Lovely little pub, fairly cheap drinks, but service at the bar was a bit frosty. Very blunt and didn't feel very welcoming.

Had eaten at other Chef and Brewer pubs before and always enjoyed a good meal so booked a table at the White Horse on advice it got busy on Sundays. Indeed it was busy - although we were served in good time and the meal arrived after a normal waiting period. The Sunday roasts ordered were great. Variety of ingredients... More

Lunch today - 2 couples and a dog! I had roast turkey with a side of cauliflower cheese - delicious and generous portion. My husband has the wild boar wellington, which he said was outstanding. My friend had rib of beef, which was melt in the mouth, and her husband had venison medallions, also excellent. We were so stuffed that... More

As a party of 6 with two teenagers we asked if we could have a table at short notice on a Wednesday evening in October. They said we will squeze you in and sure enough it was busy when we arrived. The food was good the service was very efficient. We understand the pub recently had a new chef and... More

Nestling amongst the lovely half-timbered buildings of Shere, close to the tiny bubbling River Tillingbourne, is a former 15th century farmhouse and Grade II Listed Building called The White Horse. It's hard to imagine an English country pub more idyllic. One of Hollywood's most romantic films 'The Holiday,' starring Cameron Diaz and Jude Law, was shot there. In fact, the charms of Shere have lured the creators of 'Four Weddings and a Funeral,' 'Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason,' and 'The Wedding Date' and 'Molly Moon' too.In its former life, The White Horse was a 15th century farmhouse called: 'The Cripps,' and it became an inn sometime in the 17th century. It is also rumoured to be a former smugglers' pub after a secret cellar was discovered during extensive renovations. Authentic timbers taken from Nelson's ship, 'Victory,' are thought to be part of the pub, and there are also some traditional village stocks on the premises too.Inside, private spaces, nooks and crannies set the scene for romantic dining whilst, outside, a shaded courtyard ensures the perfect setting for eating al fresco. Come rain or shine, The White Horse is a must for lovers of traditional British country pubs.

Bridget Jones- Press Reports (icSurrey Dec 4,2003, by John Williams)
Hollywood descended on St James' Church, Shere, for the filming of a major British film. International stars Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth, as well as a host of British comic actors, were involved in the filming of the sequel to Bridget Jones's Diary in the village.
Two hundred extras and crew bustled around the normally peaseful streets as a crowd of expectant onlookers jostled to see the celebrities. Tonnes of false snow were sprayed over the church and graveyard and throughout the morning the village experienced an early-winter blizzard. Several police officers attended the site to control the lorries that served the set and to try and contain the paparazzi photographers who were there to snap the stars.
