Had family and friends over from USA and thought afternoon tea would be good idea. Not at Topes, scones like rock cakes and only choice of two selections for cakes. Very poor considering booked and mostly paid for well in advance.

I have a confession to make. I've never eaten here before lunch today. Why? I had in my mind a restaurant called Mr Topes rooted in 70/80s "gastronomy" and trading on the faux Dickens heritage that Rochester businesses seem only too keen to perpetuate. It was a great surprise, and relief to be honest, that I was fundamentally wrong. Expecting... More

Visited last night for the first of what will become a regular Friday Evening Gin experience. The upstairs room has been decorated suitably and we had a nice table just for the two of us. Good range of modern Gins of varying styles from across the UK. All reasonably priced and served with Feverfew Tonics plus a few added botanicals.... More

Visited Topes in a group of 5 on Saturday evening. We only had 2 courses as we were still recovering from the antics of Friday night. Our mains were superb, we ordered 2 side dishes to share between us but we could have done without them to be honest. My partner said that the sea bass was the best fish... More

Had lunch here for my father in law's 85th birthday so three generations of us in a party of five. The restaurant was cold (daughter kept her coat on) and service was slow. About 50 minutes from sitting down to getting our food. This was blamed after about 45 minutes on choosing the duck which took time to cook. Another... More

Dropped in here for some coffee and cake after exploring Rochester Castle, the quaint buildings and the winding streets of Rochester. They had seating outside and we were able to sit there with our coffee and cake and watch the world go by. A lovely little spot for a break after investigating the surrounds.

Great and varied menu, very good and attentive service and excellent ambiance. Always busy so I'd imagine booking would usually be required. A really great experience all round.

I was taken her as a surprise and this place is superb. The place is warm, cosy and very well set out. The staff are fantastic, so friendly and welcoming. Then there is the food......beautiful. Great portions and very tasty. The steak was superbly cooked and the apple crumble was excellent. A really wonderful dinner in a wonderful place.

Visited this restaurant for first time for husband's birthday. The staff were attentive friendly and you felt they spoke to you as an individual rather than just another customer. So important to encourage you to return. The food was cooked perfectly and it was of a very high standard as we chose the set menu. Wine was superb and we'll... More

Description
TOPES restaurant is a modern British restaurant centrally located in Rochester High Street in Kent and has been awarded two AA rosettes. Chris Small, head chef and co-owner, has created several different menus, including a special set price lunch (L16 for 2 courses and coffee) and mid-week evening menu (3 courses for L25). In addition, there is an a la carte menu for Friday and Sunday evenings and traditional roasts on Sunday. All ingredients are bought in fresh on a daily basis from local suppliers and the menus reflect seasonal produce. The restaurant is set in a 15th, 16th and 17th Century building and many of the original features remain. However, the restaurant has a modern feel to it to reflect the modern style of dishes on offer.
