May 2018 solo
N&V Johnsons Restaurant is attached to a popular Petro-Canada gas station at the junction of Highway 16 & Highway 37 north (to Alaska). The family and I have stopped by here countless times over the years, but always just to get fuel. Not once have we ever stopped by and dined at the restaurant – at least as far as I can recall. I guess we always figured “hey, we’re less than an hour away from Terrace. May as well wait!” That seemed to me like perfect logic, but curiosity finally got the better of me on a solo trip down this fantastic strip of Northern BC highway. After touring around the local area, I decided to stop by the restaurant for a bite to eat. The first thing I noticed? For what is essentially a truck stop, the restaurant is remarkably clean, spacious and even inviting. The setting is casual, but the seating is comfortable and unique – comfortable because the restaurant is adorned with large booths and unique in that the booths feature Aboriginal designs in the form of the ovoid. Furthermore, each and every one of the tables are hand-painted by local artists thus giving the restaurant a bit of character and promoting the local place and space. Even the menus – while pretty unremarkable as far as food goes – highlight and feature local sights tourists might wish to visit in the Kitwanga and Cedarvale areas (i.e.: Kitwanga totems and/or the Seven Sisters). I like this because not only is N&V Restaurant promoting local place and space, but they’re giving artists something of a modest platform through which to highlight their work. As for the food, it is, as I said, unremarkable. In fact, pretty much everything I ordered came out of the freezer and/or out of a can. Now, to be fair, I wasn’t expecting high end cuisine at a truck stop restaurant, but surely we can do a bit better than this? I’ve had higher quality offerings at Husky House Restaurants. FOOD: 2/5 SERVICE: 3/5 VALUE: 2/5 RECOMMENDATION: I think the only real positive I can highlight about N&V is the fact that they place some emphasis on important Kitwanga-Cedarvale landmarks. Service, while friendly, was spotty at best (the server spent her time chatting with friends) and the food is definitely nothing to write home about. My recommendation? Get gas at the attached Petro and then drive the ten or so minutes up the road to 37 Grille for far superior cuisine. PS: If you found this review helpful in any way please hit the “like” button!
