Established in May 2017, the taverne George's yard is located in the house where Fisherman-George used to live. We, Manolis, Yvonne and our team, are looking forward to present you cretan dishes with finesse and a modern touch. Just perfect,grilled wild mushrooms in pesto to start,shrimp spaghetti in black garlic,hidden under the 'shell on' shrimp were at least 10 shrimp swimming happily in the sauce ready to be devoured. Lamb special was,well special.free bread with olives and a beautiful chocolate/orange cake at the end also free of charge. Throw in a half litre of very nice house white wine and a bill of only €38 we walked away with a rather large smile on our faces. Be warned book in advance as very busy but with very attentive service with genuine smiles. We loved it.

I've been here several times in July and August this year and I was extremely impressed by the delicious food and also by the warm, fun and absolutely amazing owners.
We tried a lot of dishes in the menu and all of them were stunning. We agreed that this was one of our favourite restaurants in the world.
There's a handful of restaurants in Matala, some of them good, but none compares to George's Yard.
One evening, by mistake, the check was wrong. We paid 6 EUR instead of 66. As we paid by card, we didn't notice until next day that we had been charged this little. So obviously the next day we went there and paid the rest of the amount. The owners were so impressed, that it made us emotional.
I sometimes think about this restaurant and wish to come back one day.

Bravo Manoli the food experience was marvelous, keep going sky is the limit. Guys don’t miss to try shrimps with the magic sauce with ouzo or raki is like Asterix magic filter !!! Risotto with sea food and safran was very good. salads is like are coming direct from the garden fresh and juicy. pastitsio in the pot top ten is an orgasm in your mouth !!! Thank u

We came to you with a group of 10. You sat us on a bench like farm chickens and refused to add another table.
We ordered two bottles of sparkling water, but that order was messed up.
The house wine was good but served warm. We asked for another liter, chilled, but they forgot.
For ten people, they brought us three tiny plates of olive oil and bread (see picture).
In the first hour of wait, they only managed to bring us three appetisers.
An hour later, we still had no food, no water, and no wine, but the staff, who we later found out were family, were just chitchatting. It didn't even cross their minds to check on the guests that support their livelihoods!
I went up to the owner, who by now was drunk, and explained in a calm way if he could bring us the wine we ordered an hour ago, as well as some water. He sent his wife instead, who started an argument with me. She suggested we should leave because she didn't appreciate me being upset about how they were ruining our evening by not taking care of us. We were glad to take her advice and leave.
Disorganized, incompetent, and arrogant. What a disgrace!

Excellent starters we shared.
Main was a little bland and sadly quite disappointing. Pork came with just potatoes and would’ve benefitted with some salad or veg, same with the mousakka. Small portions for the buck but authentic flavours.
Staff could spend a little more time caring about the clients that are there.

Charming restaurant with delicious and well prepared food. Very friendly service.
We visited on a hot day in June. There is only outdoor seating (under a roof) and a fan to cool you down. There is no view to the beach, but the food and service is definitely worth a visit to this restaurant. Clean toilet facilities.

Delicious ! Impeccable service and incredible dishes (especially fish) go there, the value for money is very attractive and the service is top notch! Little extra: a plate of fruit with a shot of local alcohol (raki) is offered to you!

We know very well Matala for more than 15 years and we never heard about this restaurant before. It might be a new one...
Anyway it was an awesome experience with really tasty dishes especially the starters.
Definitely a rightful place in top 3 of Matala.

What can I say, among the places where we ate in Matala this is certainly the best.
Very courteous staff, and excellent dishes of which the care and quality of the ingredients is clearly evident.
The icing on the cake was all this at a price slightly lower than the average of the restaurants we went to.
We were there on the last evening of our stay in Matala, but if we had discovered it earlier we would have made it a regular stop.

Excellent place in Matala where you can eat traditional Greek food, that is also changed from the traditional recipes in a really interesting way.

We had the privilege to enjoy our dinner at George's Yard taverna twice.
The lovely Nikolidakis family, Elena, Stavros and their parents Yvonne & Manolis, will really treat you right and warmly welcome from the moment you come in till you leave.
The taverna offers delicious Cretan recipes in a modern and refined taste, where excellent fresh ingredients and a talented chef are the core key.
Just to name a few, we had (pics enclosed as well):
- appetizers selection (with dips, pickles and different kinds of cheese)
- skioufichta, the traditional homemade pasta
- George's Yard salad (literally mouth-watering)
- grilled tuna fillet
- fresh tomato pasta (flavour explosion)
Definitely a delightful experience!!!
In case I forgot to mention remarkable details, I'd like to close this review with a picture of the note I wrote to team @George's Yard, which clearly expresses my whole and sincere appreciation 💛

We had shrimps saganaki and feta as starters. Main dish pork and bifteki. The main dish was good but not on our taste, we should have chosen something else. The owners welcome you with smile, they show passion in what they do.

Delightful! We booked the first evening and returned the second evening too. Small terrace, elevated above the road, fast service, typical dishes. The George's yard salad is delicious, in addition to that we had: dakos, saganaki, feta, tzatziki, saganaki shrimp, octopus, squid, lamb, linguine, and many other dishes. Bought local beer and wine. The placemat and paper napkins all have the George on a boat logo 🤍🌈
Kittens wander around regardless of the evening chaos, trying to find something to eat. Pleasant atmosphere

Great service and tasty food. One of the best restaurants we visited in Crete. We recommend having a dinner around 8pm if you are visiting without reservation. For later time slots reservation is needed. Enjoy!
