Castle Blue is a unique space - and you should arrive clearly understanding that this is not a roadhouse. The owner/chef Ted cooks everything himself. He’s a one man show and he cares about everything. So you have to be patient when it’s busy but...it’s worth every minute.
His team is amazing - so food. Yes, there are some specialties. His dry ribs are famous. They are fall off the bone delicious with an almost crispy exterior. A serving isn’t enough for a full dinner - you’ll need a side or an appetizer - but these are not to missed.
The burgers are great and the fries and poutine another specialty. His Caesar salad dressing is home made. Not from Gordon Food Services or Sysco but from scratch and tangy goodness.
There aren’t many tables inside so if you are a group arriving slightly out of peak time might be better unless it’s nice for a table outside. They have a modest beer selection but have picked a few goodies.
It isn’t full of ambiance - I’d love to give it a makeover. Just a few touches inside to make it less sterile. I really think it would benefit so much from a few design touches. He operates an exceptional kitchen and the dining area could be upgraded to reflect his otherwise high standard of excellence. But if you have to be outstanding somewhere in your restaurant, it’s pretty amazing when it is the kitchen!More
Stopped in here quick after reading some rave reviews. Wanted to add that we also loved this little spot. Very gourmet, large portions. We apped on the dry ribs. So good. I had the fish and chips. So delicious, hubby had the burger which he...enjoyed also!More
Castle Blue catered our The KEE to Bala wedding and the food was amazing! Pulled pork and Jerk Chicken on pretzel buns with truffle macaroni, coleslaw, Castle Blue salad and more! With my husband being a former chef, we knew we had to have the...BEST wedding food and Ted nailed it! Can’t wait until next summer for our next trip to Bala for Ted’s fish & chips!More
After seeing good reviews online we decided to go check this place out (we were 3 adults and one kid). To start we shared the jerk poutine, deep fried pickles and dry rub ribs, poutine and pickles were ok, the ribs were great. For a...meal we had fish and chips, beef dip a burger and my son had the kids size fries and chicken nuggets. First of all we had to ask 3 times for our dishes from our appetizer meals to be cleared away, it never happened and we were given a different excuse each time as to why they couldn’t do it immediately. After dropping off 2 of the 4 meals, our server with now empty hands STILL couldn’t take our other dishes away even though she was waking back into the kitchen to get the other two meals. After dropping off the last two meals she still couldn’t take our dishes away so my husband and I had to squish to the one side of the table and basically eat on top of each other because there was no room because of all the dishes all over the table. The burger was way over cooked and the flavor was horrible, the fish had no flavor at all and was also over cooked, the batter was mostly black...well it was either over cooked or the grease was in need of a change. The beef dip was not shaved beef as a real beef dip is, it was just slices of beef with a weird dressing on it and the dip was mediocre. My sons absolute favorite thing is French fries and he was unimpressed, and his chicken fingers were probably just out of a box from the frozen food section at the grocery store...Overall crappy service, crappy food and we won’t be going here again.More
