I eat here about 3 times a week. Good Sushi. Love the spicy sashimi and salmon tataki roll. Not a huge menu but enough variation to please.
My family has been buying from sushi J since they opened and since it has been a family favourite! The food is always fantastic and so is the service! Definitely a business in town worth supporting!
I love the Korean fusion incorporated into the sushi, it’s so good. Definitely a nice surprise to find in the Kitimat mall.
Sushi is excellent however mixing different rolls (separate orders) in the same container to try and save on take out container costs is not only on the cheap side but dangerous to people with certain food allergies. For the price I would have expected 2...containers,2 sets of chops sticks and 2 soy servings....after all they were 2 separate orders for 2 different people. Not impressed!More
I had a selection of rolls from sushi j and they were delicious. I love the Korean fusion with the addition of gochujang to the sashimi. Friendly service, highly recommend.
There can be a bit of a wait for your sushi if you order at the same time as other customers, but the presentation of the sushi and the quality is very good. I particularly enjoyed the spicy sashimi tuna and unagi roll. Give this...one a chance - they have got in stride now. They work very hard in a small area. I recommend taking the food to go - the mall is not really a stay-in area anyway. You're meant to take it with you!More
The food is always good. Excellent sushi! Never a disappointment! I have been there a number of times and the service is awesome!
Always so incredibly good. Extremely polite, friendly and fast service. We're so fortunate to have a wonderful fresh sushi location that always tastes amazing in our tiny town
Sushi J is a relative newcomer to the Kitimat foodie scene and is, some would argue, a welcomed addition to the offerings at City Centre Mall. Located on the upper level in the space once occupied by Katii’s Knook, Sushi J – as the name...implies – offers up a selection of basic sushi snack treats in a fairly compact space. As of this writing, the menu is limited (and noted as “temporary”), so one would naturally assume that it’s going to be expanded upon at some point. But all of the sushi mainstays are there: miso soup, California rolls, tiger rolls, veggie rolls, ebi, sashimi (salmon and tuna) and some teriyaki dishes, to name a few. When I checked this establishment out, I didn’t go in expecting something the caliber of, say, Miku or Tojo’s in Vancouver. After all, one has to recognize where one is: 1) Kitimat. 2) In a mall. Thus, one should tone down expectations and acknowledge that we are in a small town and in a dying mall. Plus, the restaurant’s space really is a “knook” and so there isn’t too much that can reasonably be expected. In short, I was anticipating mall sushi and that is, for the most part, what I got. I decided to keep my order light and got a miso soup + dynamite roll. The soup was standard and pretty non-offensive; however, I did note that after the miso had sat for about 10 minutes it started looking much more like a beef broth than your typical miso soup (strange). My dynamite roll, however, was less than average. Sure, it sounded pretty decent on paper (“deep fried shrimp, cucumber, avocado, mayo”), but the end result wasn’t overly impressive. First, the rice was very warm (cardinal sin #1 . . . it should be “body temperature”); second, the roll was quite large and cut unevenly. Have you ever tried picking up a reverse roll this big and trying to eat it? The end result isn’t pretty and quite messy. This was also one of the first times where I can recall having lettuce in a roll. But in the end, I can almost forgive the roll (“almost”), but the lackluster plating is what really does this place in. I mean, I recognize Sushi J is set up primarily for takeout, BUT they have a small seating area just behind the stand and even ask if “it is for here or to go.” Dining in isn’t that great because your sushi gets served to you on a flimsy paper plate while your miso, likewise, is served in a cheap Styrofoam cup. Such bare-bones set-ups make using condiments a bit tricky. One other thing I took note of while I sat and ate my mediocre lunch was that Sushi J needs to work on their timing. They are very slow, even if nobody is around. My order took 10 minutes to receive, for example, despite being extremely basic. Their lack of time management also cost them a bit of business while I sat there. Two other patrons placed an order for 2 California rolls and a miso soup “to go.” Once they were told “20 minutes,” they dropped the order! Why something so basic should take so long – especially when it’s not busy – is beyond me. FOOD: 2/5 SERVICE: 3/5 VALUE: 2.5/5 RECOMMENDATION: As far as I know, Sushi J is the only sushi restaurant in town, so they must get some business; however, it certainly wasn’t busy when I visited. Granted, I did hear a couple of people say – as they passed by – that “the sushi there is really good” but I definitely don’t share those sentiments. Then again, if you’re the only game in town you’ll likely become “good” by default. And that isn’t exactly a badge of honour, either.
