Wee Geordies was an interesting experience. The pub is away from the main part of town, in a seedy looking area. The entrance is kind of hidden away behind some shrubbery and a narrow corridor. The primary doorway is one of those old steel doors,...paint chipping away. Even from the outside the place looks rather suspect and, for a short while, I contemplated whether or not I should even go in. With its dark greys and blacks, this neighbourhood pub just didn’t feel very welcoming. However, in the interest of continuing my culinary tour of Kitimat, I resolved to check it out. Thus, I walked through the hallowed doors of Wee Geordies Neighbourhood Pub. Upon entering, I got the sense that this is probably one of those pubs where everybody knows everybody. The bartender/server was certainly very friendly with all of the (middle-aged) patrons inside – they seemed to be on a first-name basis. Add to this the fact that I immediately felt like an outsider – an alien – that had suddenly invaded a sacred space. It was akin to being in one of those moves where some city slickers stop off at a pub in a small, nondescript postage-stamp sized town. You know what I’m talking about – those scenes where, once the stranger enters, they temporarily become the focus of attention because “who are you?” That’s how I felt. It was an uneasy feeling, almost creepy. I again asked myself, “should I even be here?” Anyhow, I took the time to observe my surroundings. If nothing else, Wee Geordies struck me as the textbook definition of “dive bar.” The general atmosphere, space and setting spoke very much to this fact. On the whole, Wee Geordies is a fairly small space. With the number of chairs and small tables placed throughout, I can’t help but imagine this place getting very crowded in the late evening hours as locals come by to wet their proverbial whistles. In terms of amenities, the pub features a couple of flat screen TVs, projector screen, two KENO boards within mere feet of one another and a single pool table. There is also a small space for live music. All in all, the atmosphere of Wee Geordies wasn’t overly inviting; it felt much more like an old time BINGO hall, especially with the dim lighting and deep-fryer smell permeating the whole space. Despite all of the above, I decided to try some food. The menu was resting on the bar and was, I noted, incredibly limited even for a small town pub (see attached photo). Basically, it featured items one can easily get out of the freezer. After receiving my food (potato wedges & wings), I concluded that, yes, virtually everything on the menu probably does come out of the freezer except, maybe, the hot dogs. My wedges were dry, bland and sad while the wings were OK for frozen packaged ones. Indeed, as far as pub fare goes, the offerings at Wee Geordies are pretty sad. FOOD: 2/5 SERVICE: 2/5 VALUE: 2/5 RECOMMENDATION: There are better pubs in Kitimat that offer far superior food. Not that Wee Geordies will be affected by this review. They seem to have a devoted local following. Plus I suspect most people come here for the booze rather than the food. And, hey, after a few cold ones I’m sure the menu can strike anybody as appealing ;) Not recommended. Wee Geordies has been in Kitimat a long time and if you want a social fun evening this is the place. Poker tourneys are held on a regular basis and everyone gets to know your name.Nice atmosphere, great staff.
