We have been in the Caledon area for years (a family farm) and always wondered about the food at Tom's as we drove by on errands. Finally we stopped in on New Year's Eve for lunch. A pleasant surprise. Based on the other patrons, this...is a regulars haunt. As the heading says, we had pleasant and attentive service, the obviously home made food was delicious, and the prices were a pleasant surprise. My wife and I had soup, a burger, and a beer - all for $50 with tip! Can't beat it.More

Had a late breakfast. Was crowded enough that we knew it had to be good. Eggs Benny was damn good. Coffee was a good and hot and refillable. Lovely staff and good vibes.

We enjoyed a lunch here with our 12 year old grandson, We all enjoyed our burgers, and all came as ordered. We got fries and a house salad with the banquet burger, and the fries were very good. The salad was pretty small, but the...huge fries made up for that, I am glad the sizing wasn't reversed. The waitress was on her own, but seemed to keep up with the tables. The cook would pop out to help her every so often. They have an ad for help in the window, so I think they were somewhat understaffed. The locals were eating there, and that is always a good sign. A great old school diner!More

We ordered breakfast, our server was also the cook, without washing inbetween jibs and when the food arrived, the homefry potatoes were cold, burnt, and tasted like vinegar and the english muffins under the eggs benedict were wet and soggy mush.

We decided to try this place as there are not many places to eat in Caledon. We had high hopes from this small restaurant. The service is very slow, Is was a busy lunch hour on a Sunday and they are in need of some...help in the kitchen. My peal meal sandwich came without the lettuce and tomato which was supposed to be on it. The French fries were undercooked but looked very brown. We were wondering if the oil needed changed? Both my husbands meal of a simple BELT and my peal meal sandwich was very underwhelming. We gave them a try and will not be back, sorry.More

Service is always prompt. Staff are friendly. Love the open face turkey sandwich mind you the clubs are great too. No pressed turkey meat, real pieces of fresh roasted turkey. Great place for everything without busting the bank.

We had the breakfast special for 5.99. it was two eggs, three pieces of very meaty bacon, a large helping of panfried potatoes, and two pieces of toast. With a piece of raspberry pie for the road. It was as good a breakfast as I...have had anywhere. Got to overhear lots of local conversation, which is always fun. They had wifi available as well as high chairs.More

If you live on southern Georgian Bay, it's good to know about what restaurants are available between there and Toronto to the south. The drive from Collingwood to Toronto is about two hours and a lot of people will take the Airport Road to get...to the Big City for a hockey game, theatre, or some special show. It used to me that there was a handy restaurant at Tullamore, just north of Lester B. Pearson International Airport, and one could visit there for a meal and a pit-stop. That restaurant closed years ago, but Tom's Family Restaurant in Caledon East is filling that meal-providing gap. If you stand outside Tom's Family Restaurant, as we did on one recent evening visit there, you can hear the jet planes passing by overhead. At this point north of Toronto the planes are way up there and the cabin crew might be passing out snacks. If you want a snack, or a full meal, Tom's offers a variety of menu items and at reasonable prices. Tom's has been long-established on one side of the Airport Road just north of the town's post office. The current owners are carrying on a tradition of diner-type food as well as being a social hub and a community supporter. We stopped in on the way back from seeing “The Audience” in Toronto and there was not much of an audience about an hour before closing time at Tom's. My partner ordered chili, which came with garlic bread, and I ordered French-onion soup which came with a heap of fries. I like soup and French-onion is one of my favourites. My partner's chili was just the right amount of spicey and she slaked her thirst with a coffee and a glass of water. I can't say that this evening's French-onion soup was my favourite. The soup itself seemed like a light consomme, but it was slathered with cheese and had lots of onion. I have had soup at Tom's before and can say that their homemade carrot-and-ginger soup was delicious. This time the French-onion soup was hot and filled a need. If you look around at the walls of Tom's Family Restaurant you will be entertained. In one place they have a bulletin board which has some photos of famous people on it. Famous people such as boxer George Chuvalo and hockey-night-in-Canada great, Ron McLean. On the same bulletin board, the other evening, Tom's was promoting an upcoming pancake supper at nearby Mayfield United Church. I always like businesses which give back, or promote things, in their community. On another wall, they have an old Macleans magazine page in a frame. Also, elsewhere, you can read a newspaper column about this restaurant and a citation from a member of parliament. Tom's posts their specials and their prices so it is easy to see what's what. They also have a take-out menu printed in a no-frills way on plain paper. Tom's is a down-to-earth place and the waitress who served us cheerfully has been there for seven years. Some people might think of Tom's as a “greasy spoon”, but it's not that at all. The restaurant and the washrooms were spotless when we were there. The food being served has lots of variety and the premises reflect the times from which they came. People are friendly. Excellent spot for a half-way-there stop, or a half-way-back break on the Airport Road.More
