If you like nature, hummingbirds and great vegan food made with rich caribbean flavours then cafe mariposa is the place to be. I visited this restaurant with my significant other for my birthday and I fell in love with the different varieties of hummingbirds I...saw. I never knew Trinidad had so many species of hummingbirds. The owners were very hospitable and are great cooks. I enjoyed how they infused cocoa in most of their dishes and I was amazed at how all the flavours came together. Overall, I enjoyed my time at cafe mariposa. To top off the great food and beautiful scenery, the owners sang "Happy birthday" in spanish and english. It was a pleasant surprise. I recommend cafe mariposa to persons that enjoy great food and nature.More

Our family brunch at Cafe Mariposa was a truly exceptional experience that I recommend for everyone! The menu was very creative, which included a lot of unique flavours that you can't find anywhere else. We chatted with one of the owners between courses, while she...cooked over the Chula and explored the garden filled with hummingbirds. While we bought some dark chocolate on our way out, the whole family came out and put on a beautiful parang performance. What made our experience so memorable was the warmth that we received from everyone and the unmatched customer service. We can't wait to return and support this family business!More

Off the beaten path but certainly worth the trip on a narrow curving road. The gardens are lovely and the hummingbirds plentiful and varied. There was no menu and no prices listed. It is expensive but the food and service is wonderful. We started with...cocoa tea, then plantains with chocolate. The main course was chicken rice breadfruit salad vegetable salad and finished with mango ice cream. We also had a citrus drink. All of this while we watched the birdsMore

Visiting Cafe Mariposa for lunch while on a Calico organized excursion was a highlight of our birding trip. Combining birding, nature, culture, agriculture with a delicious inventive meal centered on cocoa made for a most satisfying afternoon. Our group of 14 was catered to by...the dedicated Guerrero family, serving scrumptious local foods, educating us on local culture, cocoa and singing traditional Parang songs. As we sipped their smooth invigorating home-made cocoa tea we searched for and located the bird we were in search of, the Ruby Sapphire Humming bird. This bird was no at ASA Wright so it was a real treat! After tea but before lunch we had time to walk the beautiful grounds. As we sat on their veranda humming birds fed at the feeders. Lunch was delicious followed by home made desert prepared with local ingredients. I especially enjoined the avocado ice-cream. It was slightly sweet very smooth and oh so satisfying.More

Location was away from it all...amidst the trees, birds and nature. The restaurant itself is tiny but cosy, and they make you feel like family. Only thing was the food was abit overpriced.More

Well worth the drive to get here. Feels like a world apart - a magic garden almost. Peaceful, rustic setting. The verandah at the back overlooks a lovely tropical garden filled with blooms and feeders to attract 12 varieties of hummingbird, other birds and butterflies....Ingredients for the set menu are locally sourced and local cocoa is used as a seasoning in many dishes. Food is lovingly prepared and served - delicious. All services by reservation only. Highly recommended for locals and visitors alike.More

Marcia made a delicious vegan lunch for my me and my husband which we enjoyed while watching the antics of hummingbirds--we identified seven species. Worth the drive to Lopinot.

We visited Café Mariposa for dinner, an overnight stay and breakfast followed by a tour of their garden and it was a really wonderful experience. For dinner, we had cocoa tea (really delicious!) pumpkin and cocoa soup followed by main course (fish for my husband...and chicken for me) then a chocolate cake for dessert. They were very accommodating for my kids. My oldest (aged 9) had beef ribs and they had some chicken strips and cassava chips for my youngest (aged 5) which suited them both and they both enjoyed the cake! The food was beautifully cooked and the service was brilliant. We stayed overnight upstairs in cabin-style rooms (2 people per room) which although they didn't have air conditioning, were equipped with fans so kept us cool. Lovely little balcony overlooking the garden and an ensuite in each room. Breakfast was delightful. We sat on the balcony overlooking the garden and were surrounded by dozens and dozens of hummingbirds. It was truly magical. We had grapefruit, cassava porridge with cocoa, pork and scrambled eggs and finally fried plantain with peanut butter, all delicious! Again, great service and eating surrounded by the hummingbirds really was the most amazing experience. We then had a short tour of the garden where we learned about cocoa followed by a demonstration on how they make their chocolate. All really informative and my oldest in particular found it very interesting. Overall it was a fantastic weekend and I would highly recommend Cafe Mariposa.More

My friend and I visited here for lunch n we were most certainly not disappointed. The location and ambience were great and the many fluttering birds were the best company one can ask for. Honestly I have never seen such a varietyof humming birds and...I am by no means a bird watcher but sometimes you jus cant deny the natural beauty around you. The staff were very friendly, the food was great something worth experiencing, very different n unique, the complimentary cocoa tea took me back to childhood n the milk shake was a divine. Definitely would visit again n recommend to others.More
