Everything was amazing, and the staff were kind, bilingual, and attentive. We had the escargot which the sauce it was in was incredible, and perfect for the fresh bread provided with whipped butter with hints of hazelnut and finishing salt. My partner had the beef...tartar which he savored every bite. Then I had duck confit and he had veal. The potatoes and beets were perfect, and the duck was excellent. This restaurant is just down the street from me, and I had heard great things, but never tried it. Happy we finally went. The atmosphere is very Quebecois cabin style, which is authentic and steps away from Gatineau park and an entire sugar bush. It’s expensive, but not as expensive as tasting menus in Ottawa. Tables were far apart so you didn’t feel that you were participating in other peoples dinners. We had a great time, my new favourite French restaurant in Ottawa/ Gatineau. Also tons of free parking.More

for fine dining I’d say the experience was just OK not great and borderline good. The food was decent and really interesting things on the menu. I had the what is it sweet sweet bread and my wife had the deer medallions and they were...OK but the food came late. The pacing wasn’t great, I was comped a glass of wine but overall the service was just OK and the food wasn’t wonderful but it was an interesting place and it is set an a beautiful area of old Chelsea and in the fall when the leaves are changing colors I’m sure this place is spectacular but on a Friday night in the middle of summer I’d write it as OK. I think we spent $200 and I doubt I’d go back there but it’s a it’s a romantic place old world charm to the building and I would say it’s just OK for fine dining.More

Many thanks to Ena, our waitress, her colleagues & the Chef for a wonderful family diner for a special evening (35th anniversary). It was a very lovely evening seated outside on the terrace. L'Orée du Bois was able to accommodate all of our many &...varied food intolerances, we had many options (beef, fish, duck veal & more) & the meals were superb, portions were generous. Un gros merci à vous tous!More

My wife and I had our anniversary dinner here. The restaurant is nestled in a lovely country setting surrounded by gardens and woods. The menu is not extensive but offers interesting farm to table choices. We started with appetizers of puff pastry with creamed mushrooms...and a salmon rillette. Our mains were duck confit and halibut and dessert was a trio of sorbet and a raspberry chou. Everything was delicious, beautifully plated and service was impeccable. While not inexpensive, would highly recommend for special occasions.More

Had a pre-Valentine day 6-course dinner. Portions were just right - enough to enjoy the culinary art, not too big to be unable to continue. We went for the wine pairing, which was awesome, but happy that we decided to share one pairing, as there...would have been too much wine involved. Only downside is that this ended up being pretty pricey (over $300 for two), but at least we knew in advance. Great experience and cozy atmosphere.More

I had heard great things about this place for years but didn’t get here until now. It was a wonderful experience. First of all , charming and professional staff and superb customer service. The decor is rustic and comfortable, tables well spaced. The food was...beautifully prepared. We had the caramelized onion soup and mains of duck confit and hare with foie gras. Classic French preparation. The food is of exceptional quality but next time we would look for something lighter as part of the meal. So rich! Can’t wait to return in warmer weather and enjoy the patio area!More

We had a wonderful meal with friends, with excellent service and food that was delicious. The onion soup was a creamed version and was very flavourful. The beef filet was done to perfection, as was the duck breast and trout. Each plate was a picture...of art. Finishing off the meal with chocolate mousse was just perfect. The coffee was very good as well. The service could not have been any better; the wait staff were friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. We had an excellent meal in wonderful surroundings.More

A much anticipated meal that did not live up to expectations. My starter (wild mushrooms) and my friend’s (foie gras) were excellent and if we’d stopped there that’s what I’d award. However my duck (their reputed specialty) was dry and the potatoes salty. My friends...steak was fine but not special and covered in a tasteless, unidentifiable green vegetable. We pressed on however hoping for redemption from dessert and again it was an unremarkable crème brûlée. While the setting for the restaurant is lovely, our little table, jammed against a wall in the hall did nothing to enhance the evening. The most redeeming part was the fabulous server who looked after us. We only occasionally dine out at this price level so all in all a disappointing experience.More

Location is out of a dream. Service is impeccable. But the food stole the show. Onion soup was everything it could be. Delicious. Just thinking of Foie gras with strawberry marmalade make me reach for my phone for reservations. The recommended Lamb from the grill...with the Moroccan inspired salad and sauces was out of this world and I didn't care who watched as I used the fresh baked bread to get all of it off my plate. And the classic Crème Brule done right. I almost always order this if I see it on the menu and always enjoy it but the extra thick layer of sugar on top and the creaminess of the filling has spoiled me to where I may need to look else where for future dessert options. My guests raved about the suggested wine paring to the point they had the waitress write them down so the could buy bottles to enjoy and home. Everyone left happy and I received thank you emails from all of my guests. Always hard to live up to such high expectations but this place did.More

In December I read that this restaurant, located 30 mins from our house, was voted as top 4th in Canada on Tripadvisor, and we had to try it! Reservation was easily done online, clearly mentioning that one of us was vegetarian. We arrived and welcoming...was not that great….. No one at the welcome desk, and we had to wait for a waitress walking by that area. She invited to leave coats and jackets in the wardrobe (still chilling around here…!) and escorted us to the table. Simple mise en place (as a former farmhouse makes sense). First surprise: despite mentioned in the reservation, no one had the clue about one of us being vegetarian, and options were very limited! Only 3 appetizers (two of them both with mushrooms), and no main. The waitress proposed to change one main replacing the veal with…… mushrooms (again!). Appetizers were very good (my bone marrow was excellent), but mains were definitely on average (a lot of heavy cream…., covering most of the taste). Service was not great (not enough personnel for the number of tables). Overall, for a price of 90 cad each (one appetizer, one main and one drink each) you would expect much more. Box ticked, but we’ll not be back.More

Beautiful setting, location and building, one which is perfectly suited for the lovely Gatineau area. Food was set with detail and purpose. Everything was absolutely delicious. From the soup to the appetizer to their specialities; each bite was phenomenal. The chef and team clearly take...great pride in what they are doing and it shows. Honestly this was one of the best meals of my life. Even a dessert as ubiquitous as creme brulee was prepared with such care. My partner and I both found this restaurant to be very impressive. The server and staff were wonderful to interact with, also made great recommendations on food and wine and cocktails. The waitstaff we were lucky enough to have for our table was professional, skilled and knowledgable and really went the extra mile for us while making everything appear seamless and easy. We were provided a very high quality fine dining experience in an environment that felt warm, inviting and comfortable. That is not an easy line to walk. It is not simply eating coming to L'Orée du Bois, even to say it is dining is not quite accurate. Visiting this location, in Chelsea QC, is AN EXPERIENCE not to be missed. My partner and I will most assuredly be returning, and we recommend you all do as well.More
