On The way to Ica, we decided to make a stop at the Fundo San Jose and make a tour of the place. On the way out following the signs, easy way, we got to the restaurant, As it was lunch time the place was starting to get full. Our food was amazing, I ordered the tacu tacu Mamaine, served... More

Loved the food at this out of the way restaurant! The food was different than anywhere else that I went to in Peru. The flavours were subtle but well developed.

I have been here a few times over the years, but I have never written a review. Mamainé is a well-known, Mistura-winning chef in Perú and the food here in her casual restaurant is outstanding and inexpensive. My son favors the milanesa de pollo here (which isn't on the menu, but they will make it), and it speaks volumes that... More

Went on our returnig trip from Paracas, took the detour to visit El Carmen and to taste Mamaine's cuisine. It was totally worth it, have read some bad reviews about the food, everything is bull. The "papa a la huancaina", "ocopa", "seco con frejoles" and "arroz con pato" everyone of them was extremely tasteful. I would definitely recommend this place.... More

After finding our way by collectivo from El Carmen...we had a pleasant 15 minute walk to the restaurant surprised to find it is this big establishment in the middle of what looked to be concrete homes in disrepair. I was glad we ate there because maybe it helped support some of the families in the village...the food was good...not great... More

The food was terrible, we had stomac problems after we left, and the roads are VERY bad, close to the restaurant. The prices are not cheap, still, not very high. I don't recommand this place for eating.

Thanks again to TripAdvisor, we avoided the overpriced hotel food and found this restaurant. Be warned, this place may be closing at 5:30pm as lunch is the important meal in Peru. We took the cab from our hotel to El Carmen to El Guayabo. Chincha is principally a farming community so don't expect the town to be anything what it... More

This time I got a chance to meet the owner Mamaine Cottito personally. She is very personable and knows how to treat customers. I was even treated to some Afro-Peruvian drumming and dance entertainment by youth from the the surrounding community of Guayabo. I would highly recommend the dish frijoles negros con seco (black beans, rice, and beef). This is... More

This Afro-Peruvian restaurant known as El Refugio de Mamaine is located in the Guayabo section of El Carmen in Perú's province of Chincha, the hub of Afro-Peruvian culture. Peruvian “Soul Food” has its roots in the southern department of Ica where African slaves were brought to work the plantations. Their dishes are prepared with ancient recipes that only black women...
