About
Traveling from Toronto to Kingston my family and I stopped here for lunch following positive reviews on web. We received a warm, friendly welcome. Enjoyed great fish and chips, chicken wings and burgers. The place was decorated with all sorts of interesting memorabilia from Ireland. Unfortunately we were unable to stay for a music session which I believe are amazing. The cost was very good value and I would highly recommend it to other visitors.

There are few restaurants or pubs in my local community that I have not tried. I have enjoyed most, frequent a few and am at home at John Walsh’s The Snug in Newcastle.
The atmosphere itself takes you overseas away from your daily grind and submerses you in Irish comfort. The staff are friendly, not forced friendly because their manager is watching, or are vying for a large tip, but truly connecting friendly. They care about how you are and welcome you in a manner that makes you feel like you are an invited guest.
The pub and its patios are immaculately maintained, it’s rare to see a wayward French fry on the floor even at the busiest hour. The taps shine and glasses are spotless.
There are many authentic Irish meals to choose from, as well as typical pub fare if you just fancy chicken wings or a clubhouse sandwich. All are priced well, giving you great value for your money.
I had the open faced Lamb burger and fries today (the fries are fresh cut potatoes from a local farm), and washed it with a perfectly poured Guinness.
I have no financial gain or business connection to The Snug or any of the other local pubs or restaurants in town, this is an honest review from a guy that loves a quality experience.

Cozy, casual and welcoming is the vibe that permeates this Irish pub. Service was attentive and entertaining. The ultimate munchie platter with an order of calamari was enjoyed and devoured completely. Our party included one very hungry (growth spurting) teenager. We were able to sample many of their main dishes. All came beautifully plated and hot. There mashed potatoes stood out for flavour (I think they call them something else). The pot pies had light flaky crusts and generous flavourful fillings. The great Canadian burger served with a knife holding it together was a hit. All in all we enjoyed our visit with great comfort food in this local pub. We would do it all over again when in the area.

We just picked up a large takeaway order for our daughter and her university friends who are having a socially distant get together/reunion in our yard. The order was precise, piping hot and your staff could not been more accommodating. Hats off to you and your crew!

We recently visited friends in Newcastle and had dinner on the new side patio. The food, service and prices were amazing. A shout out to our server Sue, it was very busy and she never stopped running but always had a smile and time for a chat.
Three of us had lasagna and Caesar salad and one had the Trio pot pies with the Irish mashed potatoes. All the food was amazing, so much so that I asked for the recipe for the potatoes and will be making them at home. Save room for the sticky toffee pudding, another huge hit.
Coming from Liverpool, it was like stepping back in time to an authentic pub in the old country. We had a nice chat with John and he was very friendly and welcoming, he and his team are doing an amazing job during the pandemic.
Our friends tell us the fish and chips are another must have. So we look forward to visiting again to try them and sit inside and enjoy all the memorabilia that was shipped from Ireland. Newcastle you have a gem of a pub there, enjoy

Rainy Stormy January we ventured out for some comfort food. My wife and I both ended up ordering the pot pie trio. Steak and Guinness, Chicken Curry and Chicken pot pie with fries.
Right after I ordered I started imagining 3 reheated butter tart sized pies straight from the microwave. Instead to my delight was homemade Trio served in large ramicans with a pastry topper. Fresh cut fries and a couple of pints. It was perfect comfort food, well worth going out for. Top it off with treat bags for the kids meals. What a great meal. Thank you!

Haven't been to the snug in along time due to having moved away. Returned for a visit this week and was not surprised to find the same friendly owner doing an amazing of keeping everyone safe with all the new measures in place. I had the carrot ginger soup folliwed by homemade crab cakes both of which were delicious. Great service and even in these times still a friendly happy atmosphere. It was great to be back.

Visited The Snug bar and restaurant on Sunday with a large group of friends, some living in Ireland, some from Canada and some from the US. John and Leslie made us all feel really welcome, the back room was perfect for us. The food was lovely and the service was excellent. I can definitely recommend the beef soup with soda bread and their own amber ale was perfect to wash it all down. The town of Newcastle itself is what I imagined a rural Canadian town to look like, loads of character shops and building. A great find and definitely recommend.

I previously had a 5 star review of this restaurant but my opinion has greatly changed. We we made a reservation for 5 for my dads 70th birthday ( which I expressed in the reservation). We sat down and the waitress began to take our order, Drinks were painful to order which was the start of this ordeal. I asked the price of the special and was told either $21 or $24. It was obvious she didn’t care about our business. My husband had to get up to find another waitress to ask the price of the special . She rushed us the entire meal. She took my daughters chicken fingers away and she wanted them still. It’s was awful. I was absolutely embarrassed to have my father there on his special day. He never even was wished a happy birthday. The only time she smiled was at the tip which she didn’t deserve. The food was good. Traditional overcooked roast beef with great gravy. The pastry pot pie always delicious. The menu changed and they took off a lot of the great comfort food, 😒. I will never go back. It is too bad . It use to be a gem to go for a drive as we are not local.

Hi Nikki …sorry to hear you had a bad experience at the Snug and that you were unhappy with the service …this surprises me as we have the loveliest people working there , who usually have time for everyone and we are complimented on our servers all the time …I’m sorry this wasn’t your experience , a complimentary pice of birthday cake with a candle should also have been in play that evening , again iv no idea why this wasn’t the case …I’m glad that at least the food was good and I hope your dad had a happy birthday with his family and the company at his table …I’m guessing from the roast beef special it was a Sunday evening , I’ll be checking with the staff working that night to see if anyone remembers ….we do have a few new servers so maybe it was one of them …Our menu changes twice a year so it doesn’t get boring and we switch heavier winter food for lighter selections in the summer and switch back in the fall always , this has always been the case and our regulars seem to like it …I’m sorry this isolated incident has made you decide not to come back again …that’s too bad and I’m sorry to hear it …best wishes …John

Great little place that happens to make BIG burgers! The one that stands out is the Batter Burger... yes, a burger that has been battered and deep friend, then served on a bun. Be sure to load it up with all your favourite toppings!

Hubby and I have been regulars at The Snug for years! We recently moved down the road 40 minutes and travel back on a regular basis to visit The Snug. John and his people are most welcoming and are so glad to see us each time we come through the door. The place has run marvellously throughout these very difficult times. Dinner was awesome this afternoon. Thank you Snug!

Great Irish Pub with awesome food which I've enjoyed for years! This pub also takes groups to Ireland every year. I was lucky enough to experience one of these such trips last week and thoroughly enjoyed myself! It was definitely a trip if a lifetime. Thank you John and Mark! 🍀🇨🇮

We received a gift card for Christmas so we decided to use it for a nice meal. Due to the lockdown we decided to do takeout.
We split mandarin salad and crab cakes, to start. Both were delicious and we have leftovers for lunch. We split a steak dinner with colcannon potatoes (yummy) and veg. Lots of food and we were both full with the one meal. And of course we had to have sticky toffee pudding. We got a large piece and I have more for tomorrow as well. My husband had carrot cake and said it was very good.
The food was ready on time and pick up was safe and easy.
Thank you John and staff for a great meal at home! Well worth the trip to Newcastle from Bowmanville 😀

Well John &Mark today is my last day in Ontario and I want to give a ‘big’ shoutout to you both in making my trip to Ireland so personable and memorable! To the new friends I’ve made and to the sights I’ve seen. I’ve travelled on coach tours before but yours by far exceeds your expectations! It is totally beyond! You both are exceptional hosts and everything was so personable that it felt like home. I’d love for your company to come visit my neck of the woods sometime! Wouldn’t that be something? 😊 From my home to yours,
