There is no doubt why this is one of the top-rated restaurants on the island. Being highly rated, we definitely had to come by at least once while we were on São Miguel. Great choice. Walking into the small dining room immediately feels like it will be a nicer dining experience and our meal confirmed that feeling. The owner and chef is from the mainland and trained in Lisbon a little before making his way here. The food is fresh and local and has a modern Portuguese flair that is different from the more simple and traditional preparations but still with the same care and flavors. Everything we had was fantastically prepared and seasoned. Nothing even remotely critical to suggest here. We had the garlic bread and sauteed mushrooms for starters and the pork belly and the tuna with sesame seeds for the mains. Perfection. I am normally not a huge fan of the seared tuna with a typical rare preparation but this one with the crispy sesame seed crust was fairly amazing. Probably the best we’ve ever had. Finishing off with the panacotta and apple crumble was just as amazing as the rest. Possibly our favorite panacotta ever and the apple crumble was also extremely satisfying. Our service was wonderful and the price for the quality which included a good bottle of wine was also excellent. €73 for a meal of this quality is well in line with similar meals and experiences we have had before.
There are not enough words to describe the perfection of this place. It could hold its own in any city - New York, Paris, zurich… but here it is in Ponta Delgada! Each dish was perfectly curated and presented to be as beautiful as it was delicious. Make your reservation early and be sure to get the cheesecake as dessert…
This was the best meal we ate in our 2 weeks in the Azores. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but inside the restaurant is very warm and welcoming. The service was 5-star - the mother son duo who run it are very passionate about sharing their food with you and knowledgeable about the produce, talking you through the wonderful local wine list and special fish offers. For us the highlight was the grilled tuna, which was cooked to perfection when we ordered it rare, and the trigger fish, which was beautifully light and flaky on the inside and fried in a delicious batter, not greasy at all as sometimes fried fish can be. Although it is tempting to fill yourself up on fish, save room for the home-made desserts. The pineapple mousse was exquisite! Some of the other reviews have mentioned the prices being quite high, and although we didn’t order the whole fresh fish of the day which might have been a bit more pricey, the other fish specials were comparable to other restaurants and absolutely worth the quality for the food and the experience. If I come back to the area, I know where I will be heading for dinner. December 2022
Wonderfully curated meal and wine pairing with Bruno. We enjoyed multiple dishes with big flavours and a great (and affordable) wine to accompany them. Highly recommend a dinner at Reserva.
Went there after reading review. I come from Rhode Island, USA, where competition for the best "pie" as we call it us fierce. This pizza would definitely be a top contender. The thin crust was a nice and different change, the "gravy" (sauce) excellent and toppings plentiful, and price 8.50€ a great deal! I ordered a small (8 slice) with 5 toppings and half of it was gone on my drive home! The young owner was very personable and spoke English exceptionally well. I mentioned discovering him on Trip Advisor which gave him rave reviews. His reply, "I tries very hard!" I'd say he's suceeded.
I was here twice, once at the beginning, once at the end of my vacation. I had the irish stew and the bacon burger and both was just excellent. The meat from the burger tasted like fresh pasture cattle and the cook knew how to prepare it. The service is sometimes a little bit lost, but they just startet, so give them a chance 😉
We went for a lunch (at around 12:30) and was met with great service. The food was very good, and we used the opportunity for the lunch offer (including free homemade icetea, a soup of the day to start with, a side salad and two halfs of the main courses), which was an amazing opportunity to taste some om the different main courses (especislly if you share with someone else). Even though the place was fully occupied at moments, the staff was good at knowing who was first in line, and most people waiting had a table within 30 minutes of showing up. If you would like a lovely vegetarian meal in authentic surroundings it’s definitely worth a visit and highly recommended!
This fantastic little diner, just off the main square is a MUST if you're in Ponta Delgada. Andy and Maria have got everything right. The food is freshly cooked and very reasonably priced, and the drinks are by far the best value I found in town. These guys love their rock and roll, and the jukebox music is a great accompaniment to a visit here. Whatever time of day you visit, you are made to feel so welcome, like you're a friend rather than a guest. If you're here on a Saturday night, you might get treated to some of Andy's amazing magic tricks (seriously, the guy is SO good, he will leave you baffled!) or even an impromptu jam session from some of the local students. My top tips for eating and drinking...you have to try the fish and chips and the rotisserie chicken (complete with Andy's special recipe hot sauce), but a special mention to Maria's famous and absolutely delicious Sangria and Gin and Tonics! It's rare that I visit a place that I just want to go back to again and again, but these guys have just got it so right, I always find it hard to leave!! Can't recommend it enough.
The burgers (especially the Bonaparte) are honestly phenomenal - accompany them with one of the restaurant's lemonades/iced teas or with a local beer, and there you have a nice dinner for less than EUR40. The staff was quite slow in getting the orders and seating people, which resulted in an incredibly long queue outside while inside some tables were empty. We tried to eat there three times, only managing the third time as we arrived very early (around 6:30pm) - the other times the waiting time was 40+mins. In short, amazing food - but come armed with a lot of patience.
A friend who lives nearby wanted to tryout this restaurant that is next to the Hotel Ponta Delgada. We didn't know what to expect but thought we'd give it a try. Simply wow! Maravilhoso. We arrived for lunch expecting a basic 2 or 3 star meal, but were immediately blown away by the 5 star atmosphere and service that we encountered. This little hidden gem is well worth finding and enjoying. They had the local Azorean fish and I had the Hake fish with tomato sauce tice. Incredible dishes, that were surprisingly 5 star as well! Dinner will likely require reservations as word gets out. We met the young head chef as well as the serving staff and kitchen staff. All young, talented and friendly. If you are able to dine here I highly recommend it. A new "special" go to place for me when I desire to be pampered.
Wow, I really can't thank Joel enough for hosting our group for my husband's 40th birthday in July–we had such a special evening! We were in a private dining room in the back of the restaurant that felt part of a wine cellar, and from the moment we arrived Joel created an atmosphere that felt like the best kind of family dinner–the wine kept flowing (local wines from Azores and Portugal, which Joel has incredible passion for!), the food was phenomenal and was shared amongst the table, and the atmosphere was intimate and relaxed. This was one of those meals where the food and wine created the space for so much beautiful conversation and connection. Joel, thanks for creating such a special restaurant!
Got a table reservation here a day in advance (tends to get packed, so the chances of getting a table if you've got no reservation are fairly low). The place is quite simple, however, they're great with beef. The food was just amazing, and the quality of the dishes is absolutely high (I guess, that comes with the restaurant using the local ingredients only). The waiting time was quite alright, and the selection of wines was good enough to have a decent beef-wine pairing. The bill was even lower than expected. All in all - if you like beef, make sure to visit this place.
The feeling when you get in here is warm, friendly, inclusive and calm. You can come here for coffee, drink, lunch and dinner. Your always welcomed by friendly staff helping you find a seat. I have had lunch, dinner, drinks and coffee several times. Excellent food, starters are huge so share 2-3 persons so are desserts, mains are very good, I had steak, fisk, and there pasta with seafood (difficult to find the pasta). They take their knowledge of wine very seriously and listen carefully to what types of wines you like, and find their best, matching the food. I hade 6-7 different wines in all, they were superb
We missed a bit of spicy Mexican food and were recommended this restaurant by our hotel. it's the best mexican food we've had to date and we've been to quite a few around the world. they are incredibly sweet and the service is just top notch. it costs 6-7 euros by taxi from the center each way. it is cheap to eat there, there were 2 of us and we ate for 50 euros starter, main course + a jug of margarita and 2 beers and we were full. can definitely be recommended.
Sao Pedro was rated #13 in Ponta Delgada, but the other three decide we would go there so we reserved for a couple of nights later (must reserve!!). We've been traveling for a couple of weeks - Madrid, Barcelona and now the Azores - and this is by far the best dining experience we have had. The service was excellent for a change. Our appy of calamari was tasty but too much batter. It did have a couple of dipping sauces which no other place had provided. We all had big fish for lunch, so we all had variuos chicken dishes, and they were superb. I could eat my chicken with fruit in a curry sauce every day, and all three of the others were feeling the same way. We shared two desserts that were also excellent. There was an extensive wine list, and even with an expensive wine it was barely over 100 Euros. THE pace to eat no matter how it is rated!!!!
Deserving of its high ratings, Lan's is a simple restaurant -not fancy at all- offering very good food at very reasonable prices. We chose to eat here to accommodate our family's fussy eaters and no-one was disappointed. I was particularly pleased to find such an excellent choice of veggie meals (I went with the delicious Thai vegetable pasta, if you're interested). The staff were really welcoming, friendly and efficient, too.
From the outside, the interior looked a little dark but it is worth making the step inside. A decent range of well-priced dishes were listed in the bi-lingual menu. Both the tuna and house sirloin steak came cooked as requested, and with more than adequate portion sizes. The restaurant is a little way off the evening tourist trail which is no bad thing and allowed a genuine, pleasant dining experience.
Anywhere but the Middle Atlantic, Chef Ricardo would have multiple stars. Very seriously. His creations at Boca de Cena are art, in its purest form. The restaurant is austere, even minimalist, until your eyes and ears adjust to the realization that you have stepped into something special, romantic in its uniqueness. The table in the back, catty-corner to the door, offers couch seating at 90 degrees for intimate conversation. You are greeted and seated by Chef Ricardo. It is immediately apparent that he is 110% committed to his creation. He has the innate aesthetic sense of a culinary artist, matched by the energy and enthusiasm that defines those who succeed at the highest level. For an unforgettable dining experience, ask him to organize a dinner for you. It will be exquisite ... and very reasonably priced. We just enjoyed an exceptional four course dinner for 2, with an excellent accompanying wine, and left under 100 Euro including tip. I can't touch that in Boston, and have had Michelin 2-star dinners on the continent that were not as good and set me back much more. Likely, being among the first to return after the pandemic helped make our experience unique and especially personal, as we enjoyed the opportunity and time to discuss Chef Ricardo's experiences and inspirations. From the other reviews, however, this is the level of excellence you can expect in busier times as well. As a scientist at a well known Boston university, I rarely have time to write reviews. But I know exceptional talent when I see it. You'll find it at Boca de Cena.
We were looking at the 9 moment menu but there were a couple of listed items on the list that I would not eat. We casually mentioned to the staff as we were prepared to order differently and they quickly went to the kitchen and spoke with the chef who made a couple of accommodations without hesitation. They were happy to help out and come up with a different option for me. That was the start of a great evening of customer service and food. Every portion of the meal from front to back was excellent. Perfect preparation tied with exceptional execution. The price point with the wine pairings is high but the experience is top notch. There are much less costly options on the menu and if the same care is taken to prepare them, then undoubtedly the options for a great meal are there.
Our hotel recommended this restaurant. It is not obvious, being on the top floor of a building at the end of a pier in the harbour, with no large sign to advertise it. Our dinner was very good, and very good value. Indeed the starter of tuna and squid was worthy of 2 Michelin stars. Tables are well spaced, in stark contrast to most other restaurants in town which seemed to be overwhelmed during the tourist season. Service was also of a high standard, undertaken by students at a catering school, with supervision.
Great family dining experience. You choose your meats and then get to apply seasoning and grill it yourself on a hibachi at your table. We all loved it. We ate at the #1 rated trip advisor restaurant last night and we all agreed that the food was better here. The service was excellent. The restaurant was well-air conditioned (unlike most other Europe restaurants we’ve dined at on our trip) and the prices were outstanding. The black beans and rice were cooked perfectly as were the fries. Highly recommend this place.
For 20€ you get an 8+ ounce steak, fries, and a salad. Cook your steak on a hot lava stone and try their dipping sauces. Our steaks were lean and melted in your mouth. If you are staying in Ponta Delgada; don't miss this opportunity.
We came here from a recommendation and I’m so glad we did. The servers were friendly and let us sit outside, even though the dining room was empty. We ordered the shrimp soup and the mariscada 3. Everything was absolutely delicious! The seafood was fresh and cooked well. If you’re wondering what the filled crab is, they basically fill the shell of the crab with a crab dip and they give you little pieces of toast to eat it with. It wasn’t bad at all, but it was my least favorite thing. I would’ve preferred to have a whole crab to eat, not just the claws. We finished with some of their homemade ice cream and omg that was some of the best I’ve had! There are a lot of places to get seafood on this island but I promise you can’t go wrong with this place.
My wife and I came here twice on our stay in Punta Delgada. The first time was for dinner and it was excellent. Steak was nicely cooked and tasty. My wife wasn't too hungry and had soup, bread and cheese and she was very happy. The second time was lunch. I had the chicken wrap and it was OK. My wife had a salad which was fresh and tasty. This place is on the beach so the view and noise from the surf are fantastic. Service is good and the staff very friendly. So good we came here twice! Many cheers .............
We went there early, while it's a popular spot. Received a warm welcome by the owner and staff. The starters and main courses were presented in an original way, everything was well-balanced, decorated (flowers!), it smelled good and tasted even better! After these courses we couldn't resist a dessert but we didn't regret it. Everything looked, tasted and felt right!
There are not so many touristic attractions in this part of the island but it is still worth the drive. This family restaurant serves local dishes, both fish and meat. We found that the wines were pricy for the island. The house white wine was cheaper than in other places and better than in other restaurants.
We really enjoyed our family (adults and teenagers) meal here and would recommend it. Service is friendly and efficient and pizzas were tasty. We especially enjoyed the Nutella calzone for dessert! Location is a bit off the beaten tourist track but don’t give up, the restaurant is a small oasis adjacent to the sea, with a car park opposite if needed.
Pros: Good food and nice enviroment and friendly staff. Cons: We had to ask for the kids menu, and different waiters handled different things, one the menu, one the drinks, one manager make sure everyone did their job. So everthing took very long time in a not full restaurant. The kids got their meals before ours, no sync.
We heard it was the best restaurant in Ponta Delgada but that there were always long wait times and you can’t reserve. We went around 18:30, earlier than most Europeans. We were told it would be 30-45 minutes. We actually got in at about 15. The server came and offered a blanket in case we were cold waiting. He recommended ordering two different dishes and sharing, which we did, one beef and one pork. The food came quickly and was hot and good. We were seated at a large, round table with a gercouple and a Swiss couple.Lots if fun and great conversation . It was a very reasonable price, even with a bottle of wine and a dessert to share.
This small place down by the water is amazing. The owner started by converting their family garage into the cafe, they have grown slightly working into their home. They have worked really hard over the 4 years they have been open to make it a success. The big pizza is huge, we couldn't finish ours and for such a reasonable price. They offer to wrap your left overs to take with you. Simply beautiful. We were recommended this place by others in our hotel, and we are glad they did. They close every Tuesday for a day off, it's a family run place, and we found out they close for September to have a family holiday.
